Four Letter Word / Milloy / Scuttle - Upstairs At The Garage, London - Wednesday 30th May 2001
Er before I start this may be shit because I was pissed.
Pub, Brewhouse, pint of Stella talked shit, bought another pint then we left so I had to down it, went to The Bailey, drank another pint of stella, met Shoes and properly listened to him and Aston bitch about Earache Records (oh I'm such a name dropper) was funny.
Right thats the pre-gig preamble over on to the bands, though I might start with the venue. If you haven't been 'upstairs' at the Garage looks kind of like a church hall with no windows, and it has the most surly barman ever, oh and the sound can be a bit shit.
Scuttle - woo hoo, Scuttle get better every time I see them and they're on top form tonight, not a band to everyones taste I freely admit (Tim STD reckons their nu-metal: how fucking cool is that if you shorten Soon the Darkness you get STD, haha ;) ) but they fucking rock when on form. They sound kinda like True North vying with (argh!! my minds gone blank I need a hardcore band with forceful controlled sung vocals), anyway screamo basically. (True North??? I don't get that comparison.. oh well ;) - Chris) Some of the time changes can be a bit off putting at first but when you get to know the songs they come into a life of their own. Oh and the bassists shaved off his dreads.
Milloy - now I've heard a bit about this band and basically it was saying they were good. Well nah, they were alright, a nice little melodic punk band in the vein of Dugong, Broccoli, etc (Chris they did sound like Broccoli in places don't deny it).(No, they sounded like Leatherface in parts - there is a difference!!! haha - Chris) The singer seemed to (as my mate from Nottingham would say) 'buy himself' a little too much it didn't spoil the band but it's always cause for concern, maybe hes just a seasoned and competent performer (haha in a punk band?).
Four Letter Word - Right I was really annoyed, I was a liitle drunk and looking forward to Four Letter Word because I've got their 'Cold Day in Hell ep.' and then.......i missed most of their set because I was having an argument with the barman as he'd given me the wrong change. From what I did see they looked nothing like I thought they would, maybe Chris'll fill in the rest. (Maybe later! - Chris)
On the whole a good start to the RTS collective shows although one gripe, start it earlier guys, and have longer gaps between the bands no sooner had you started a conversation and the next band were on and you had to end it (wow a running order that was too smooth, well I never).
