BROMLEY 2 WALTON & HERSHAM 1 – LEAGUE 02/02/02

Bromley defeated the opposition and the referee to win the three points at The Nest and maintained their unbeaten run in the league during 2002. Both teams struggled with the very windy conditions from the start, but Bromley took the initiative and Bartley went close once before he eventually put us in front on 9 mins. Tivey tore down the left and delivered a low cross, which was smashed in by the big striker and he came up to the fans who love him to celebrate. Walton came back into the game and although Harwood was having one of his more eccentric games he kept them at bay, with the help of some great defending from Frost and Harris. The Ravens should have had a penalty when Gibson was brought down in the box, but not for the first or last time Ref. McGregor failed to see the offence. Previously he’d only booked a Walton player who clearly landed a punch!

The second half saw Bromley assert their advantage when the ever more impressive McGowan beat the keeper to the a long through ball and left him stranded to roll the ball into the net. Minutes later McGowan was clearly flattened in the box for a penalty, but the ref was looking behind him and received no help from his linesman. After a series of bizarre decisions and petty bookings Bromley’s frustration almost boiled over when Blackman turned in a low cross to pull the score back to 2-1 on 76 mins. The game went from end to end for the last period and either side could have scored before finally after a ridiculously long period of injury time the final whistle sounded and we could celebrate our first double of the season!
