A pretty dull game was won with a classy, well-taken goal by Richard Thompson late on. The game started evenly and Beckenham were the team to get all the props for matching Bromley with solid defence and a quick break game plan. The lads from the Kent league took the lead on 16 mins when Martini brought down their forward after he had wrong footed him on the edge of the box. In a competitive game our keeper would definitely have been sent off! Westpfel converted the penalty, driving it straight down the middle.
It took 9 mins for Bromley to respond, Bartley had two efforts blocked by keeper Hopper before Smith pounced and took the ball past defender and keeper and rolled it into the net. The half ended 1-1 and was a fair reflection.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Beckenham defending well and breaking and Bromley having the large amount of possession, but failing to take the lead right up until 78 mins. Before the decisive strike the generally over-fussy referee asked for both Bromley defender Frost and Becks midfielder Cooney to be substituted after an all-in scuffle. Then came the one moment of quality when Thompson picked the ball up on the half way line and blistered past two defenders, with Grant Watts providing a decoy outlet in the centre, he chipped Hopper from 20 yards into the roof of the net to end the game 2-1.
Quote for the game, Its too early for sarcasm, save it for 3pm!
