CHESSINGTON & HOOK UTD 0 BROMLEY 1 – FA CUP PRELIM RD 04/09/04
This game was hard work, to watch and no doubt to play in! On a sweltering September Saturday we travelled down to our Combined Counties League hosts and it took just over 90 minutes for us to break them down and scrape through to the next round of the FA Cup.
The early blow for Bromley fans was the injury to Solomon Taiwo in the warm up. Consequently we wasted a huge number of set pieces throughout the game! The Ravens had the early pressure. Huggins was denied by a great save when he went on a solo run on the left side, but we did look vulnerable to the occasional Chessington break. C & H had a spell on top of us, but they over passed at times and didn’t really test Walker. Chessington’s left back got some stick after going down injured and then getting up as soon as we had kicked the ball off! Huggins was on the end of some awful fouls by their No. 2, which eventually saw the ref produce a yellow card. The half ended with Bromley on top again, but never really threatening to score.
Chessington had an early chance to score in the second half, but luckily the ball was blasted wide after Walker was left stranded. For a while we lost the battle in midfield and there was concern we could be on our way out when C & H missed another good chance, but the lads stepped up again and started to put some nice moves together. Drewett and Bennetts kept switching wings and the hard working Okafor pushed on too. Huggins had a header from a corner cleared off the line by the left back. Kember went off with a hamstring injury just to compound our frustration and then Drewett was also taken out. From the resulting free kick though the breakthrough came. A low cross by Henriques was bundled over the line by Dean Frost from close range for 1-0 and we were out of jail in the 91st minute.
