WALTON & HERSHAM 2 BROMLEY 4 – LEAGUE 08/12/01

A fitting birthday present for Mash who came down from Leamington for the game! Bromley recorded their first away win in the league against sixth placed Walton in some style. After weathering an early period of pressure Bromley came back into the game and following a fierce challenge by Dean Frost on the home team’s dangerman Savage, the balance of power seemed to swing towards The Ravens. Thomas opened the scoring on 15mins when he hit a sweet half volley from the edge of the box giving Garrard no chance. On 21mins Drewett latched on to a slow back pass and wrong footed the keeper before rolling the ball into the empty net. 3mins later Drewett was involved again, puttting over a great cross for Bartley to deftly head in the third and the HLU’s were incredulous. Walton came back into the game either side of the break and Harwood was called in to action a couple of times, standing up to the test along with his defence. On the hour Bromley’s victory was virtually assured when Watts finished off a break out of defence with a beautifully placed shot into the corner of the net from 10yards and then running to the fans and celebrating by kissing the badge. Thomas then went off and was replaced by Pearch, with BFC switching from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1. Unfortunately for the sub his first contribution was to bundle the ball past his own keeper on 68mins, under pressure from Blackman. Still we created chances on the break and Bartley was unlucky when he hit the post with a stooping header. The final goal of the game came in injury time when Harkness converted a penalty for handball, but the deafening silence of the home fans that greeted the goal told you all you need to know about the result.

Quote of the game came while on the phone, ‘Hold on Stokes, Watts might score here… GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLL!’
