BROMLEY 2 CHATHAM TOWN 1 – FA TROPHY PRELIM RD 09/10/04

Bromley eased into the first round of the FA Trophy without ever moving out of third gear against a surprisingly poor Chatham side.

It wasn’t only those who had been to Lloyd’s birthday party the night before who looked hung over as this game got off to a 12:35pm start, once a replacement linesman had been found. Everyone took a while to get going and wake up a bit, but once Bromley had livened up they took the lead on 13 mins when Drewett went on a run. The ball broke to Watson and Amoako smashed in the opener. The game was held up for some time when Chatham’s Dyer suffered a serious looking injury after tackling Drewett and was eventually carried off. The game was pretty dull and scrappy with Bromley over playing at times around the box. We should really have killed this off by half time with the possession we had. Matt Kember made a welcome return to the side and really got stuck in, making up for his brother Paul’s absence.

The second half saw Bromley still trying to make it over complicated against a Chatham defence only too happy to boot the ball out when they got a touch. On 51 mins a throw in to the box broke to Watson who calmly swept the ball home unchallenged for 2-0. Walker was steady in the Bromley goal whenever he was called upon, but he saw precious little of the ball. Rose put over a great cross which was headed just over by Amoako and Taiwo saw a lobbed effort headed away after catching the keeper out of position. Macca made some substitutions which unsettled the side and Chatham sniffed a way back in. Luckett cleared one chance off the line, but our luck ran out on 84 mins when poor defending led to Tilley finishing well for 2-1. The threat of an equaliser never really materialised though and Mr Johnson’s whistle was greeted with a cheer of relief by a pretty good size crowd who hadn’t exactly been gripped by this cup tie.

Watson, Luckett & Kember all had to receive treatment, but hopefully they’ll be ok for next Saturday’s fun at Gang Green Lane.
