BROMLEY 2 ASHFORD TOWN MIDDX 3 – LEAGUE 10/04/04

Bromley were condemned to level 8 football after being out battled and frustrated by a hard working Ashford side, who had Danny Harwood to thank for two ridiculously soft first half goals. By the time we got going it was all too late.

Bromley had early chances, but didn’t really test Burgess in the away goal. On a heavy sanded pitch they were frustrated in their efforts to move the ball swiftly and then were caught out at the back on 28 mins. Butler latched on to a Wilfort mistake and rolled the ball under Harwood from the edge of the box. It was Ashford’s first shot, but they made it count. Only 3 mins later it was 0-2 when Pomroy hit a soft low effort towards goal from distance and Danny let the ball bounce over his arms and trickle in the net. Hayes Lane was stunned into silence, a late first half rally lifted the mood, but we never really tested their keeper.

The second half started in equally poor fashion as the whole team appeared to have a collective bad game. Finally 10 mins in, a brief flash of class by Zahana-Oni saw him flattened in the box and a penalty awarded. Second half sub Amoako stepped up and tucked the ball away. From that point we should have pushed on, but a ridiculous piece of sloppy defending saw Johnson latch on to a through ball and beat Harwood one on one for 1-3 on 61 mins. Back to square one Bromley once again rallied and started to play really nice football putting the away side under heavy pressure. On 69 mins we pulled it back to 2-3 when Amoako and Watson both had efforts blocked by Burgess before Amoako smashed in the rebound. George came on for the highly impressive Potterill, but we still appeared to over play and occasionally let Ashford break away. Thankfully Danny was up to their efforts. Amoako had a header disallowed for offside and it looked like it wouldn’t be our day. Falana came on way too late to really influence the game and despite throwing it all forward it all came to nothing. The centre midfield was anonymous and the short comings of Wilfort at centre back were rudely exposed. Worryingly Harwood came up for the last corner and appeared to pull something when attempting a volley from the edge of the box.

Team: Harwood, Potterill, Wilfort, Arkwright, Smith, Drewett, Myatt, Vines, Watson, Zahana-Oni.
