LEWES 3 BROMLEY 1 – LEAGUE 16/03/04

In a very entertaining and competitive game that saw three players sent off, Bromley came out second best to a very good Lewes side, but only thanks to the brilliance of home keeper Jean-Zepherin. Macca started with a 4-5-1 formation with Amoako being supported by Drewett and Zahana-Oni going forward. Myatt got an early foul in on former Bromley favourite Kirk Watts, before Harwood made a great save from Whiteman. The other former Raven Lewes defender Joe Vines had to go off injured early on, after he pulled a hamstring tackling Amoako. On 20 mins Bromley put together a breathtaking move that involved Myatt, Zahana-Oni and was brilliantly finished by Amoako from 20 yards into the top left hand corner of the net. Only a brilliant save from Zahan-Oni by Jean-Zepherin kept the score at 0-1, following another great move. The game got more physical, but going into the half Bromley looked good for their lead.

Only two minutes into the second half Lewes equalised and then went on to tear us apart. Harvey tore down the left before crossing for Whiteman who finished well from inside the box. Another surging run down the left by Harvey saw Lewes go in front on 57 mins. This time his cross was headed home by Houghton. Macca brought on Bobby George and Paul Vines switching to 4-4-2 and almost immediately we had a great shout for a penalty when Luckett was brought down by two home defenders leaving him requiring treatment, but ref Gosling waved it away. Bromley were still in the game, although Lewes looked deadly on the break when our moves broke down and eventually we got caught going forward when a low cross from the right saw Wilfort perform an air shot over the ball and it ran to an unmarked Houghton who finished sharply for 3-1. On 73 mins Metcalfe was sent off for the home side after a two footed stamp on George. We pushed our man advantage with a series of corners, but Jean-Zepherin made two amazing saves, one from Vines and another from Drewett, then Kadi cleared a George shot off the line as we pushed for a way back into the game. Then on 77 mins it all kicked off following an off the ball incident, somehow Willy was sent off despite being on the floor and getting kicked and punched and Kadi was rightly dismissed for punching. So it was 9 v 10 for the last 13 mins and 3-1. Falana came on to try and put Lewes under more pressure, but if anything we over played and made silly mistakes when we should have gone more direct. A couple of chances were missed before Jean-Zepherin made another remarkable save from Luckett and then Vines headed the corner just wide. Game over and in truth, Bromley were just not quite good enough over the 90mins.
