CROYDON 0 BROMLEY 1 – LEAGUE 16/08/03
In a game where a win of any kind was essential for Bromley to get a good start to the season the Ravens did just enough to beat a stubborn Croydon team who also had a fair amount of chances.
The first half was pretty even and the ball spent most of the time in the middle of the pitch being fiercely contested for by both sides with little in the way of clear chances. 0-0 at the break was about fair with Bromley fans needing to remain patient and hope that increased possession would turn into goals.
With the introduction of Amoako at half time the Ravens were given an extra edge up front and his pace immediately caused the Trams defence problems. On 50 mins Bromley got their break through when a move involving Reid and Amoako saw the ball come out to Former Croydon player David Smith. With one touch he smashed the ball home into the roof of the net from 18 yards and ran over to the fans to celebrate!
The relief among both players and fans was palpable and the Ravens went on to play some nice football for a while. Ref Meilack caused much fury when minutes after the goal Amoako broke through and was clearly pulled back by the last defender. Despite awarding a free kick Mr Meilack failed to show any colour of card to the Trams defender! Gradually Croydon came back into the game and tested the Bromley defence. The whole back four were awesome, but Vines was the stand out guy who was faultless and looks better with every game. Harwood made two great saves and his handling was great all match. With 5 mins to go before the end Croydon had a stonewall penalty turned down by the Ref after Forbes pulled down Dundass. I guess things do even themselves out!
