BROMLEY 1 ASHFORD TOWN 0 – FA CUP First Quali Rd Replay. 16/09/03
After missing six clear goal scoring opportunities inside the first 55 mins and then having Steve Potterill sent off on 64 mins, for his second yellow card, it looked as though Bromley had blown it, but a fierce Joe Wade free kick on 81 mins booked our place in the next round.
The first half saw the Ravens dominate the game and our robust direct style caused Ashford problems. Tony Reid and Leroy Huggins had several good chances to score, but headers and shots from inside the box all failed to hit the target and as the half drew to an end there was concern on the terraces that we would pay the price for these misses as we did against Lewes.
The second half saw Reid miss another good chance before Ashford came right back into the game and with many Bromley players flying into questionable challenges it was Potterill who fell foul of Mr Briffitt and was ordered off. He really couldn’t have any complaints and I actually started to feel a bit embarrassed about just how gruesome we are under the new Macca style! With our Kentish visitors on top and our tactics looking alehouse at best, it took the introduction of Adolph Amoako to give the Ravens the winning edge. As he beat Anderson for pace and skill our teenage saviour was dragged to the ground and the Ref gave a free kick, but showed no card! Joe Wade smacked the free kick through the wall and past Whitehouse to send the HLU wild. Ashford substitute Thorogood came on and threw himself on the ground three times, but to no avail and with Danny Harwood equal to anything they threw at him Bromley made their way into the second qualifying round.
Quote for the game: "That was gruesome!"
