SUTTON UTD 2 BROMLEY 2 – FA CUP 3RD QUALIFYING RD. 16/10/04
This was a great display of character by Bromley coming back from 2-0 down and even having chances to win it in the second half. Their efforts were matched by the fans off the pitch who sang for 90 mins and helped spur on the team.
Bromley playing 5-3-2 fell behind on 3 mins when a soft looking free kick was knocked in by Scarborough, with the Ravens defence looking all over the shop. We then had a spell of pressure, with half chances, but no real direct attempts on goal. On 25 mins Sutton made it 2-0 when Martin was on hand to punish more uncertain defending from a set piece. We were opened up yet again soon after, but Walker stood tall and saved well one on one. The game got niggly and ref Mr Salt started to show a few cards. On 43 mins Bromley were thrown a lifeline when Corbett headed a corner into his own net to make it 2-1. In first half injury time the Ravens had a penalty turned down when Rose was floored, but we were happy just to go in at the break with a shout.
The second half started well and on 50 mins a free kick on the right was beautifully curled in by Luckett to make it 2-2 cueing mad celebrations at the covered end. We then went on to have a number of chances to go in front. Taiwo had a lob cleared off the line and Huggins blazed a chance over as we pushed on. On 65 mins Bromley’s man of the match Potterill made a late challenge on Martin who’s response was to clearly stamp on the South African defender. The Ref’s assistant spotted the crime and called his attention to it. Mr Salt showed Martin the red card and reversed the decision of a Sutton free kick. Okafor went on a mad run, but couldn’t find the finish as Bromley tried to make their advantage count. Sutton’s one second half chance was struck just wide after a poorly cleared corner. Late on Hill scuffed a chance when one on one and then in injury time Drewett appeared to have been fouled in the box, but by trying to stay on his feet he convinced the ref to wave the appeals away. The final whistle came to a great ovation from the Bromley fans and the players showed their appreciation too. Roll on Wednesday night and the replay...
