BROMLEY 2 TOOTING & MITCHAM UTD 3 – LEAGUE - 20/08/02

On a very rainy night at The Nest these old rivals put on another cracking game in a great atmosphere, and the result was a tale of how to take your chances.

Bromley took the lead on 3 mins when Kirk Watts skilfully worked his way in from the left and squared the ball across the goal for Akuamoah to tap in. The game flowed from end to end, despite the best efforts of Referee Gosling to ruin the game. Tooting broke down the left and crafted their equaliser on 14 mins when a low cross was converted by Gale. The next talking point came when Bartley and Tooting Keeper Webb slid for a lose ball and collided. Many fans behind the goal thought there had been no contact and Webb was feigning injury, but people on the side of the pitch said there had been un-intentional contact by Bartley and even some of Tooting’s players were asking the Ref, unsuccessfully, for him not to book Carl. The game was fiercely contested all night and very close. Tooting took the lead with another move down the left on 43mins, Docherty finishing off the move this time. Half time, 1-2 and all to play for.

The second half saw Bromley dominate, but during an early spell of pressure Tooting broke out quickly and extended their lead on 54 mins. Again the move came down their left and with Danny Smith having to mark three men at times we were hopelessly stretched at the back, when a long ball over the box was finished by Gale. On 59 mins Luckett smacked away a penalty for hand ball and from that point on Bromley set about their task of getting back on level terms and on so many occasions they nearly did, but not quite! Bromley fans were outraged when sub Amaoko was taken out by two defenders, waist high, on the edge of the box only for the Ref to wave play on! There were a series of corners and free kicks, but with a mixture of good defending and luck The Terrors held out for the win. They were stronger in midfield and when they had chances to score they did!
