HAMPTON & RICHMOND 1 BROMLEY 3 – LEAGUE 21/02/04

A really good away performance by the Ravens saw them stay with a shout of a top six finish in a lively match at Hampton. The feat was made even more impressive by the fact that so many key players missed the game through injury and illness.

The game got off to an eventful start when with the first Bromley attack Paul Vines was pulled back by Okafor when about to shoot in the box and referee Barnard–Smith awarded a penalty also showing the Hampton left-back the red card! The home supporters were furious as the ref had appeared to play the advantage before giving the spot kick, but a six second delay is now allowed. Bobby George put away the penalty and we were 1-0 up against ten men within 6 minutes! Kevin George had a really good debut in midfield always looking for the ball and using it sensibly, he also never stopped running just like his brother. Danny Harwood made one brilliant save just before the break, when a 30 yard shot took a vicious deflection and he managed to tip it over the bar. McKoy appeared to be brought down in the box, but this time Barnard-Smith wasn’t so generous. 1-0 at half time.

The second half had barely begun before Bobby George had to go off injured. He was replaced by Harney and McKoy was pushed up front with Vines. Harwood made another fantastic save before Bromley really started to turn it on going forward. A brilliant move involving Luckett and Drewett saw Vines go close before on 77 mins he did get the goal his performance deserved. Vines beat Ulasi to the ball, broke free of his attempt to bring him down and then coolly took the ball round Adrian Blake and slotted home for 2-0. Bromley were caught out on 85 mins when they failed to organise a wall properly for a free kick and O’Connor’s deflected effort bobbled over the line. This was the only time in the game that the Ravens defence had looked anything but in complete control with Wilfort again looking the part at centre back. Colin Luckett had a superb game and capped it by setting up the winner, his free kick from the left found Mark Willy in the six yard box and he headed home for 3-1 on 88 mins. This was a timely, well deserved, hard fought away victory.
