DULWICH HAMLET 0 BROMLEY 2 – LEAGUE – 21/04/03
One of those special days that you have to cherish as a Bromley fan. We comprehensively outclassed Dulwich and in turn won at Champion Hill for the first time since December 1995!
Dulwich looked far from promotion contenders as, from the off, Bromley showed the desire to get to every ball first and work harder then their hosts. Within minutes the Pinkies were resorting to aimless punts up field and kicking anything that moved in a white shirt, but the Ravens were not intimidated and rose to the challenge. On 15 mins, Gary Drewett was fouled and Colin Luckett put us in front with a majestic free kick from 25 yards that curled up and over the wall before bending just inside the post. 0-1 and we went mental! 9 mins later Bromley as good as secured the points when an awful Mercer goalkick looped up off a Dulwich defender and Adolph Amoako raced to the ball getting a vital touch to loop it over the hapless keeper who wiped Adolph out in the process. The ball dropped in just under the bar and you could tell by the celebrations that everyone connected with Bromley felt it was going to be our day. Harwood was steady in goal, his handling much more assured than Saturday and also much more commanding of his defence. Just before the break the tireless Bobby George appeared to be fouled in the box, but the Ref failed to give a penalty or a corner, which makes you wonder what the defender actually did connect with? Confidence was high going into the break that at least we would not lose!
The second half was a little more even, but we were never really troubled at the back, Danny was quick to anything loose over the top and the closest Dulwich went was very late on when a low cross beat everyone and the post.
The main talking point was a group of a dozen or so guys attired in pastel shaded leisure wear who stood to the left of us and claimed to be friends of the keeper. After a little banter they left the ground only to throw eggs from Sainsbury’s over the wall from the car park behind the goal. Funnily enough they failed to hit anyone and some even landed in the goal mouth near their ‘mate’! By the time Bennie G had ran out the ground to confront them, they had driven off in various tarted up Escorts!
On the pitch Wade Falana, who replaced Adolph, lead the line with style and both George and then David Smith provided some real pace and threat to a sluggish looking Dulwich defence. The game ended 0-2 and we celebrated with the players, before singing all the way to O’Neill’s! Every Bromley player was excellent and showed they understood what this game means to the fans.
