BROMLEY 1 FISHER ATHLETIC 0 – FA CUP 1ST QUAL RD. REPLAY 21/09/04
Fisher flew back their captain Steve Aris from his honeymoon for this game, but I doubt they expected him to play half an hour in goal! Once again Bromley matched their affluent opponents and this time managed to edge them out by a single goal.
The game started at a high pace and Paul Kember was clattered early on in a revenge attack for Saturday. There were half chances at either end, Suleymanoglu played well in his midfield role, Ikpa and Okafor were great at the back. Both sides had spells of pressure, Walker made a good save at one end and John saved bravely from Watson at the other, then Okafor cleared off the line when Walker was lobbed. Potterill had to go off injured for Rose and Bennetts switched to right back again. Going into the half Bromley had two chances, John tipped round a header from a Drewett free kick and shortly after Bennetts headed a Suleymanoglu cross just wide.
Fisher started brightly in the second half and Watts went close, Suleymanoglu was denied by John before being replaced by Taiwo, then the crucial point of the game came on 58 mins. Watson broke free of the Fisher defence and took the ball past John only for the keeper to drag him to the ground, Referee Hopkins awarded the penalty and showed the unfortunate stopper the red card. Aris took over in between the sticks, but after a lengthy delay he couldn’t stop Taiwo’s well struck spot kick. Bromley were flying for a few minutes. Huggins went on a brilliant run before crossing for Rose who drove the ball just wide. Aris made a good save from Drewett and generally looked pretty competent in goal., Fisher still looked dangerous on the break. Paul Kember had to go off injured for Hill and there were some worried faces behind the goal. Walker made three great saves as the game drew to a fraught and ragged end. Watson saw a long range strike sail just over when he spotted Aris off his line. Watts shot wide right at the death, but there were to be no more goals and Bromley recorded a fine win and booked their place in the next round at home to Kent League giant killers Thamesmead Town.
