BROMLEY 2 CROYDON ATHLETIC 2 – LEAGUE 24/02/04

Bromley managed to throw away a two goal lead at home to Croydon Athletic as the curse of Tuesday night home games struck again late on at Hayes Lane.

The game started in front of a poor crowd, not helped by the fact that the game was in doubt right up to 7pm. When it did get going the spread of the play was pretty even with both sides coping well with the wet pitch. Keeper Dean Mann on loan from Cray had a good game in the Bromley goal and made a couple of good early saves. Returning hero Landry Zahana-Oni was fairly quiet on his second debut, but he did set up the opening goal, when he played in Adolph Amoako who finished smartly on 29 mins. Bromley went on to dominate for a long period, but didn’t score again before the half time whistle. Athletic’s Barry Stevens was booked for diving when looking for a penalty right on the break.

The Ravens started the second half brightly and went further in front on 52 mins when Paul Vines was played in by Amoako and he finished brilliantly low into the corner from 12 yards. From this point Bromley should have comfortably won the game, but they relaxed too much and started to lose shape in midfield, really missing Kevin George who went off for McKoy and the Rams cashed in. On 70 mins Mann made two great saves, but couldn’t get to the third effort and Stevens smashed home. Luckett went off injured and we seemed to lose any direction as the half went on. This was made worse on 84 mins when Drewett was sent off following a second yellow card for dissent. Bromley were now all over the shop and gaps appeared all over the pitch. Croydon pushed on and on 89 mins following what looked an awful dive in the box they were awarded a penalty by referee Beadle. Funnell tucked away the spot kick and the Bromley fans were left stunned that we had just thrown away two points in our quest for the elusive top six finish.
