CROYDON 1 BROMLEY 2 – LEAGUE 29/09/04
This was a vital win for Bromley keeping us in the top six and a real show of character in a difficult game against a very physical side.
The game started with Croydon laying in some very heavy challenges and they continued in this vein throughout the match. Okafor received an awful challenge and had to go off for a while, but eventually returned and had another good game at left back. After early pressure around the area, Potterill had a fine effort saved by Odlum and with the momentum building the Ravens finally made it pay off on 29 mins. Huggins was played through by Okafor and despite looking offside he took the ball well and crashed his shot into the net for 1-0.
Croydon got back into the game and battled hard. On 36 mins with Bromley pushing forward a long ball out of defence came to Martin, who looked 5 yards offside, but was allowed to run on and finished well past Walker for 1-1. Bromley responded brilliantly. 4 mins later Drewett took the ball in his own half and went on a twisting run taking the ball on into the Croydon area where it eventually broke for Huggins who swept the ball home for 2-1. Just before the break Arkwright could have made it three when his header just went wide, but we went in at the break 2-1 up.
The second half saw Bromley get stuck in and battle against a very rugged side. Watson shot just over and Bennetts had a lob cleared off the line with the keeper out. Arkwright cleared Croydon’s best chance with a deft header, but there were very few chances at either end. Rose came on for Kember, Amoako for Watson and Luckett returned from injury replacing the hard working Bennetts late on. With time running out Ikpa was floored by a terrible Martin foul, but the Trams had nothing more than that to offer and we came away with the three points.
