BROMLEY 0 CAMBRIDGE CITY 3 – FA CUP 4TH QUALIFYING ROUND 30/10/04
Bromley were comfortably beaten by a very good Cambridge City side in front of a big crowd at Hayes Lane. In the end they just didn’t have quite enough to make it through to the FA Cup First Round.
Bromley started brightly - Okafor got down the left and crossed for Watson, but he had to reach back for the ball and his soft effort was cleared off the line. Only seconds later though we failed to clear the ball at the other end and Dales Binns smashed home a great goal for 0-1 on 7 mins. This knocked the stuffing out of everyone for a while, but both fans and players picked themselves up again. Matt Kember replaced an injured Taiwo and provided much needed bite in midfield. Huggins headed across just wide as the game flowed from end to end and Walker had to make two good saves when City pushed on. By half time though Bromley had started to run out of ideas on how to break down the solid Conference South team's defence. Huggins ran his heart out, but Watson looked strangely disinterested.
The second half saw both sides push on. Bromley were opened up quickly only for the final shot to go well wide. Amoako came on for Okafor with Macca going 4-3-3 and his introduction gave the forward line extra spark. Simpson shot wide for Cambridge after Drewett gave the ball away and Bromley went close from a corner, but City still looked likely to catch the Ravens on the break as they went looking for an equaliser. Luckett and Walker both had treatment for injuries, before Macca threw a fourth forward on with Suleymanoglu replacing the steady Bennetts. Bromley appeared to be choking on the pressure as time went on, the passion was missing and so was vital leadership on the pitch. As we began to look tired the game was finished by a Langston header from a corner on 86 mins. The centre back and captain appeared to be unmarked and made no mistake! Drewett had a soft effort saved before in injury time Binns got his second as we were opened up on the break again. Drewett had one final effort palmed away by Roberts, but there was no end product to Bromley’s huffing and puffing and they lost to a better team from two leagues higher.
