Yeast / Grand Central / Jae Schraeder / Chuck Farley - Croydon Cartoon - Tuesday 16th May 2000

Quick review of Tuesday night’s gig in order of appearance :

Chuck Farley – I’m watching this band while I review them. It’s their fifth song and they’ve been on stage for 25 minutes. And I want to go home right now. I’d rather miss all of the other bands than witness any more of the biggest heap of toss I’ve seen in ages. And the ironic dancers dancing only for themselves and for their friends on stage and not because they have any real interest in the music. Not my thing. Fuck off. Sorry.

Jae Schraeder – Really fucking good actually. Fabulous guitar bass-melodic Jawbreaker style interaction. Come on, everyone knows that the bass was 80% of Jawbreaker’s melody. I’m not talking about the vocals though. They were totally different and while good, didn’t draw me in quite as much as they perhaps could have. They had some great songs and played really fucking well for a band that self-proclaimed “we haven’t practiced for 2 months”. I’m glad I stuck around. Definitely one to go and see again. Oh yeah, half the Chuck Farley Pan’s People fucked off during this set. Big surprise there then!

Grand Central – I’d seen this band before eons ago but couldn’t really remember what they were like. Now I do. The lead singer looks like Greg Norton and has a powerful vocal range. The guitarist is fucking excellent – especially during the slow harmonious parts of the songs. I had it in my head that this lot were a hardcore band but I was totally wrong. Pleasing, powerful, sometimes moving songs. Fabulous.

Yeast – Missed them unfortunately. Due to the late arrival of equipment, Grand Central didn’t go off stage til about ten to eleven by which time we had to go for the bus home. Sorry guys. Maybe next time.
