An Old African Fable

One day while walking through the jungle, a man stumbled upon a baby monkey. No one was around, the monkey was all alone and abandoned. "Surely the mother is around somewhere," retorted the man.

But no mother was in sight.

So he decided to take the baby monkey home with him. "What harm could there possibly be in a baby monkey?" The man asked himself.

Day after day the baby monkey was fed and day after day the monkey grew.

Soon the monkey became to big to handle and started to become a little rough with the man and had to be caged.

Before much longer, as the monkey was continuing to be fed it was soon apparent to the man that it had become a full-grown gorilla, all 400 lbs. of it!

"But as long as it was caged it was alright to continue to keep and feed it," the man always told himself.

One day, the gorilla was able to escape from it's cage and overcame the man and devoured him, every bit and piece of him.

What is this illustration telling us?

The gorilla is representative of sin. It starts out as a baby monkey, harmless, cute, and innocent.

"Oh, it won't hurt to just try a little bit!"

"It doesn't hurt to just look, just don't touch!"

"I'll just take a peek!"

And as it is fed and cultivated it grows and becomes bigger and bigger before it eventually becomes a gorilla.

More powerful than ourselves and unable to be contained. It gets out of control and eventually devours and consumes our very lives. Sometimes resulting in divorce, prison, or even death!

It's never too early to let the monkey go, set it free while it's still young, and live!
