Plain Talk on the Plains

GorChat has always been different from other sites. From it's very conception, KNIGHTRANGER sought a way to give our chatters a taste of how Gor really would be if we all were living on that planet. The wilds were a revolutionary idea when GorChat was launched.

The wilds MUST be used when you go from one GorChat room to another GorChat room.

Let me repeat that. The wilds MUST be used when going from one GorChat room to another.

Too many people on GorChat -- Free Men, Free Women and slaves -- seem to feel that they can get Scottie from Star Trek to beam them from one room to another. NO! Once again, you MUST go through the wilds (either the plains, the forest or the sea, depending on which is appropriate) to go from one room to another.

Room leaders -- all you Ubars, Tatrixs and Administrators -- it is YOUR job to make sure that those who come to visit DID, in fact, use the wilds to get to your room. If they didn't -- boot them. AND, teach the members of your room to check also and just ignore completely those who beam from room to room.

IF every room on GorChat would enforce this room, think just how exciting the wilds would be! There would actually be a lot of activity as people go from one room to the other to visit, to trade, and so forth. Remember, the wilds can only be as exciting as all of you decide to make them -- and right now, you are NOT making them very exciting.

Once you are in the wilds, you must post the required number of posts before you can leave (these are listed on the wilds' entry pages). You also will find that sometimes random posts appear in the wilds. The random posts apply to the person whose name is directly ABOVE the random post.

Now, some of these posts will indicate an injury, others do not specifically say an injury. The important thing about these random posts is that they impede your progress across the wilds by imposing penalty posts. For example, if you need six posts to get across the plains and a random post with a two post penalty gets you, you will need eight posts BEFORE you can leave the wilds.

Now, if a random posts does get you, it's up to you to decide how serious the injury is. When we set up these random posts, we assumed that the injuries would be minor. For example, if a larl claws you, perhaps it only grazed your skin or tore your clothing. In general, a one-post penalty should result in the very minorist of injuries and a two-post injury should result in one a little more serious, but not so bad that you are disabled. Major injuries occur when an animal or another person is actually on the plains attacking you.

Those who chose to play animals in the wilds are reminded that it takes a lot to build up a personna. Please remember that and don't try to kill every person you encounter in the wilds. In fact, in general animals won't mess with people unless they feel threatened. So, if you are playing an animal, wait and see if the person is going to attack you before you go after them.

And for those of you who enter the wilds under your name, remember, the animals out there are huge and vicious. Why would you start shooting at a larl if you could just go about your business and get out of there? If you go to the wilds to hunt game, that's one thing, but if you are just passing through on your way to another room, I would suggest you try to avoid the animals as much as possible.

Remember, the wilds CAN be dangerous. I see many, many of you (especially the FMs) who think they can handle anything they come across out in the wilds. Well, in truth, you probably can -- as long as there is only ONE of them. But if you come across two in the wilds, you likely will be dead.

Think about it. You want to play an animal? Get someone to go out there with you as another animal and you could raise total terror. It is almost impossible for one person to post quickly enough to defeat two.

Is your room a den of thieves? Think of what you could do if two or three of you went out to the wilds at the same time and waited. You could rob nearly everyone who came out there alone.

Angry with someone on GorChat who comes to your room and disrupts things? Form a coalition with the other rooms and put a patrol out in the wilds, three or four strong at all time. In effect, you have barracaded the disruptor in his room. If he tries to leave the room, he has to go through the wilds -- where you are waiting to capture, enslave or kill him.

There are many ways to make the wilds more exciting. They remain, at this point, largely an empty canvas. It is up to each of you to take paintbrush in hand and paint a life into them. If you do it right, they will quickly turn into what KNIGHTRANGER envisioned -- a place where you can experience true danger, true excitement.

Until next week!
