Did You Know?

by Mechelena

It's time again to ask, did you know?

For instance, why is there a tribe called Dust Legs?

Dust Legs:

A tribe of Red Savages who inhabit the Barrens; so-called because they were the last tribe to domesticate the kaiila. (Savages of Gor, pg 148)
I guess they were not too keen on kaiilas and did a lot of walking, which would make their legs dusty.

Here is something you might not know about.

Ice house:

A place Goreans can go to purchase ice during the summer, although most Goreans cannot afford this luxury; the ice is cut from ponds in the winter and is stored under sawdust until used. (Guardsman of Gor, pg 295)
What a way to store sawdust.

So, where is the best place to sell a slave in Ar?

Curulean:

The most prestigious slave auction house in the city of Ar. (Captive of Gor, pg 355)
Did you know there are Marshalls on Gor?

House marshall:
A position within a free woman's home responsible for security and/or travel. (Magicians of Gor, pg 13)
Interesting, wonder if his name is Matt Dillon? *grins*

What is the lesson of the leather?

Initiatory whipping:

The beating usually of about 10 strokes, which a slave girl receives upon being brought into a new household to remind her that she is a slave and under discipline. Sometimes called the lesson of the leather. A final blow delivered at the end of the initiatory whipping is called the gratis or mnemonic blow. (Rogue of Gor, pgs 129-130; Guardsman of Gor, pg 204)
Think new slaves remember this?

So, where does the High Council meet?

Semnium:

A public building that houses the high council, or governing body. (Mercenaries of Gor, pgs 108, 141)
Well, that is about it for this week. Again, I will be hunting out there for you so that I will be able to ask, "Did you know?"

Be well, Goreans.
