Second Thoughts

So, who is your City Second? It's possible some of you couldn't really say. Titles change from camp to camp. And so do positions, with promotions, arrivals and departures further clouding things up.

Some of the Camp Seconds include:

Rori MacGregor - Turia
Damien - Kassar
Roland Torc - Bazi
Orion - Tuchuk Var
And... Sten Trahearn, and myself, who share the duties in Port Kar, which, as a city of two locations, provides work for us both.
So, what does a Camp Second, do? Well, if you look at the list of names above, you can see that they include some of the more serious, long-term and experienced GC members. These are people who have the knowledge, and judgment, to essentially run their cities in the absence of their Ubar -- because when the Ubar is absent, that's pretty much what a City Second must do.

In general, a City Second has to know pretty much everything the Ubar knows, and has to be able to make decisions favorable to his City and equitable to his City members, at any moment, when the Ubar is not available. The authority abruptly falls to your Second, to decide, and woe be unto a Second who makes bad decisions. People die, honor is lost, and the Brothers and Sisters you appreciate are suddenly throwing heavy objects, at you.

Much has been made of City Seconds who assume unwarranted authority. I've often been accused of this. My response -- tough. You want my job, ask for it. But understand, if you take it, you can't give it back. It's yours, and you're stuck with it. And often, you won't like it, because at times, you must make decisions you would prefer not to make. Cities and Camps do not always lend themselves to automatic harmony, and when there are disputes, the Second is one of the people who has to decide. His decisions are seldom universally loved.

If you don't know who your Second is -- find out. You NEED to know, because your Second can help you. If you know who your Second is, then let him know that you know. He'll appreciate it, and you'll make him better.
