Mouthy Free Women

The demeaning of men, whereas it is permitted, and not unknown among, free women, is not permitted to female slaves. Such, on their part, can be a capital offense. (Magician of Gor, pg. 227)
At first glance at this quote, One tends to think, "Then it's my right, as a Woman, to mouth off if I so choose. The Men of Gor are too uptight. They should relax and not get Their leathers in a knot over every little insult a Woman flys past them. So there, hurumph!" (Okay, so I added the "hurumph.") But, as We all know, this issue festers discord in the center of disruptions in Our homes.

What exactly defines what is allowed for a Woman to say without being punished or collared? What is considered insulting to a Man? These questions illustrate the fine lines that We, as Women, walk everyday, for there are as many differences in Gorean Men as there are Women. Some Men enjoy the coy, sweet, demure Woman, while others delight in the spunk of Another. And what One Man would allow and even delight in, another may find completely undermines His sense of honor and, therefore, comes with a price to be paid for by the Free Woman.

I think what it comes down to is a sense of timing, and awareness of Your situation. No matter where a Woman finds Herself, She must be alert to the whims of Men, and adjust Her behavior accordingly. When She is home, She can relax knowing the Men well, and Them knowing Her. She can be spunky and even enjoy some playful jabbing or verbal spars. But, once a visitor comes to Her home, either as invited guests or having just dropped by randomly, then a Woman’s behavior must be adjusted. You'll even note that the Men often adjust how They interact with the Traveler, until they can gauge His attitudes in a word or a deed that He reveals to Them.

Also, when She is a guest in another's home, logic dictates that She should behave in a way acceptable to those of that home. (So does Emily Post!) Again, We adjust our behaviors according to Our environment. I'd add that much depends on the creativity and cleverness of a Free Woman. It is so easy to be spirited and spunky, but it is a whole lot harder to be so, and NOT be insulting. And if the Woman fails, she will find Herself being lashed for it, or worse!

It's a fine line We walk on, Ladies, but it's a beautiful thing, and would not be Gor without it.
