Plot: Oliver Queen has a really crummy day, after being told off by people whose lives he's saved, hunted down by hired killers, and tailed by Bruce Wayne's private investigator.
Like L.A. Williams said in the lettercol, "Batman didn't show up 'til the last page." This first issue would've been much more suitable in a Green Arrow title, since that's whom all but the final pages feature.
Since there isn't any Green Arrow monthly right now, O'Neil seemed to decide to pen a mostly Emerald Archer story in a Bat-book. That made me a little impatient, because I kept turning the pages, wondering when in the heck Batman was gonna grace the $3.25 book with his appearance.
The opening page was great, though, because it's almost like Ollie's going to leap out and nail you with an arrow or three. And it's definitely good to see him again. He just has a few rotten days in the story, poor guy.
The O'Neil I longed to hear from came through on page 5, when he spoke of what the streets of the city were like at 3 a.m. Ah..."melancholy charm". Denny's wit wasn't lost in this issue, with cracks about the detective's "water pistol" and the sounds it makes, and Bruce's sissy/nerdiness, but other than that, it just didn't grab me.
