Greenville def. Manchester College (3-1) 30-19, 30-18, 21-30, 30-27 (9/6/03 at Rose-Hulman, Terre Haute, IN)

Match #2 - In the fourth and final match of the tournament Greenville played their best volleyball of the day against Manchester College. Manchester came into the match 2-1 in the tournament, however Greenville jumped on top early and never relinquished their lead in each of the first two sets. In game one, Sarah Swanson put Greenville up 8-0 as she served 4 consecutive aces to start the match. A Manchester timeout with G.C. leading 10-2 seemed to turn the tide as Manchester was able to cut the lead all the way down to 12-9 forcing a Greenville timeout. G.C. was able to rebound behind a great offensive game from Julie Kaufmann (5 kills) as they extended the lead to double-digits before winning the set 30-19. Game two was much like the first with Greenville taking an early lead and extending it as the game went on. Michea McKay led the balanced attack with 4 kills while Heidi Woods and Kaufmann each added 3 in the 30-18 win. With a chance to win the match 3-0, Greenville struggled early in the third game falling behing 9-15 and 10-20 before rallying with 8 straight points to cut the lead to 18-20, however they ran out of gas late as Manchester took the third game 30-21 forcing a fourth set. Greenville controlled the fourth game from the start building a narrow lead before Manchester cut it down to 17-11. Defensive replacement Carissa Garman's back row kill sparked a big rally for Greenville as they pushed the lead to 25-15. Manchester put on a desperate surge late and cut the lead all the way down to 28-27, but Julie Kaufmann recorded her fourth kill of the game to put Greenville to 29 and Kelly Kepley served her first ace of the day to finish the match with a 30-27 victory.

"We finally limited our mistakes in the final match against Manchester and it showed in the result," remarked Coach Tom Ackerman. "Our serve receive was the best it had been all weekend and it led to a much better offensive attack. We played some very tough teams this weekend and it will definitely prepare us for the conference season coming up."

Greenville finished the two-day tournament with a 2-2 record to bring their season mark to 2-3. They will travel to Lincoln Christian College on Thursday night seeking revenge for the opening night loss.
