Principia
def. Greenville (3-2)
28-30, 30-20, 20-30, 35-33, 15-10
(9/23/03 at Elsah, IL)
September 23 - In yet another marathon match, Greenville College dropped another
5-set heartbreaker on Tuesday night at Principia College by a score of 28-30, 30-20, 20-30,
35-33, 15-10.
As was the case in the two 5-set losses to Lincoln Christian College
earlier in the year, Greenville was able to take a 2-1 lead after three sets, but
Principia was relentless on defense and scrambled their way to a hard-fought 35-33 win in the fourth
game and was able to finish off the match 15-10 in the final frame.
Greenville knew going in that Principia would be one of the best defensive teams they would play, and Principia
did nothing to change the expectations.
Greenville was able to hit successfully in the first set as they were
able to fight to a 30-28 win on 18 kills and just 4 errors. Principia answered in the second set with a solid game of their own
with a 30-20 victory, however Greenville built an enormous lead in the third frame and was sitting
on set point at 29-12 before Principia put together a late surge before Greenville put the game away
at 30-20. Principia carried the momentum into game four as the teams fought well past 30. It took
nearly 10 minutes to determine the pivotal set point as the teams battled back and forth before Jenna Edgington
finished the set for Principia with one of her 21 kills to force game five. Principia jumped to an early
lead and never looked back in the 15-10 win.
Kelly Kepley
had a career night finishing the match with 19 kills and a .378 hitting percentage. Michea McKay tallied
14 kills and Julie Kaufmann had 13. Sarah Swanson continued to excel from the serving line adding 5 more aces
to her team-leading total of 26. Megan Vandiver added 8 kills and 6 blocks and Heather Caddell followed up her season-high 59
assists on Saturday with 53 more. Principia had just two players in double digits in kills on the night,
but their defense was enough to offset for their .217 hitting percentage for the match. Calais Brown led Principia with
22 kills and Jenna Edgington added 21 kills and a game-high 22 digs. The two combined for 43 of the team's 72 kills.
As expected, Principia's defense kept them in the match as they tallied 83 digs in the match.
"Principia never quits or gives up on a play or a match," commented coach Tom
Ackerman. "They are relentless on defense and we just couldn't put balls away. Kelly Kepley was
outstanding again tonight for us." The loss was the first for Greenville
in conference play moving them to 2-1, and 4-5 overall. Greenville will host unanimous
conference favorite Fontbonne University on Saturday at 1:00 in HJ Long Gymnasium. Fontbonne
finished last season a perfect 14-0 in conference play and is off to a 2-0 start this year.
