Greenville def. Blackburn (3-0)
15-10, 15-8, 15-5
(10/14/00 at Greenville)

October 14th - Homecoming weekend brought out the best in the Greenville volleyball team on Saturday as they defeated Blackburn with a dominating performace winning 15-10, 15-8, 15-5. "That was definitely the best we've played this year," remarked Coach Rick McPeak. "After our recent struggles it was so nice to play that well."

The first set was a back-and-forth affair with both teams playing good sideout volleyball. The Lady Panthers eventually fell behind 7-10 before three big points off of Michea McKay kills tied the game at 10. Kristi Harms served three consecutive aces at a crucial point in the game to push the lead to 13-10 and Rashell Temples followed soon after with an ace of her own as Greenville took the first set 15-10. McKay finished the first set with 8 kills on just 16 attempts.

Greenville kept the momentum as they rolled to a 6-0 lead forcing an early Blackburn timeout. The visitors would slowly crawl back into the set and cut the lead down to 9-8. Greenville would extend the lead to 11-8 and a pair of Sarah Swanson kills put the lead out of reach to 13-8 as G.C. would eventually take the set 15-8. Outside hitters Michea McKay and Sarah Swanson each banged out 5 kills in the second set for Greenville.

Game three was more of the same as Blackburn never threatened after taking an early 0-3 lead. While the first two games were led by strong outside hitting, the third belonged to middle hitter Julia Wheeler. Wheeler hit .571 in the set with four kills on just 7 attempts to lead the Panthers to the 15-5 win.

Greenville excelled in the basics on Saturday as their serving and serve receive were nearly flawless. G.C. had only 2 serving errors all match compared to 7 aces and had only 3 serve receive errors on nearly 50 attempts. "We played such good all around volleyball today," added McPeak. "When we play with good ball control and pass that well, we are very difficult to beat. Sarah and Michea were great all afternoon receiving serves which lets Heather go wherever she wants with the sets and makes our offense very strong."

Offensively, Greenville hit .305 as a team with three players finishing with double digit kill totals. Michea McKay led the team with 16 kills (16-2-33) and a .424 hitting percentage and fellow outside hitter Sarah Swanson had 11 kills (11-3-26) and hit .308. Middle hitter Julia Wheeler played another steady match ending the day hitting .450 with 10 kills and freshman setter Heather Caddell assisted on 37 of the team's 43 kills.

Greenville will travel to Webster University on Thursday night and will return home Saturday the 21st when they host Maryville.
