October 21st - Despite a very solid all-around effort from the Lady Panthers, Greenville dropped a three set match to Maryville on Saturday 12-15, 14-16, 10-15.
In the first set, Greenville trailed
3-6 before putting together a nice run of offense to take a 10-8
advantage. Maryville would tie the game at 10, and later take
a 10-12 lead only to see G.C. come back to tie the score at 12.
A couple of late errors by Greenville helped give Maryville the
set 12-15. Sarah Swanson and Michea McKay had excellent starts
on the outside as Swanson hit .555 (5K, 0E, 9AT
)
and McKay added four kills on just 9 attempts.
Greenville played an excellent game in the second set leading nearly the whole way. They took a 6-4 lead thanks to strong jump serving from McKay and more effective hitting from Swanson. Swanson tallied four kills on her first four attempts in the set as G.C. pushed the lead to 11-7 and later 13-9. Once again, however, the errors seemed to come at just the wrong times as Maryville crept back into a tie at 13 before going on to take the set 14-16. The second set was full of excellent execution on both sides of the net, but Greenville was unable to hold a late lead once again. Lindsay Hairrell had a solid game offensively finishing with 3 kills on 7 attempts.
In the final set, Greenville was forced
to play from behind throughout until a Lindsay Hairrell ace gave
them the lead at 9-8. Greenville would take a 10-8 advantage only
to see Maryville battle back with some huge defensive plays as
they would take the final set 10-15. McKay a
nd
Swanson each had excellent numbers in the final frame with McKay
finishing with 7 kills and Swanson with 5 on only 11 attempts.
"They played great defense all night and made us earn every point we got," remarked Coach Rick McPeak. "We had some huge hits that they dug and they were able to sideout so effectively all game." The mistakes piled up for G.C. all match as they finished with 14 serving errors and 10 serve receive errors. "Those are the two categories we try to work on because they are the most important parts of the game. When we don't execute them, it's very difficult to beat good teams."
Greenville played another effective offensive match and were led by excellent outside hitting from freshmen outside hitters Michea McKay and Sarah Swanson. McKay finished with 16 kills (16K, 3E, 38AT) and a .342 hitting percentage while Swanson had a career night with 14 kills and a .297 percentage (14K, 3E, 37AT). Lindsay Hairrell continued her solid play from the weak side with 6 kills, 2 blocks, and 3 service aces. Heather Caddell finished the night with 40 assists (just five off her career high) in the defeat.
Greenville will be on the road all week
with three matches in St. Louis starting with a match against
Fontbonne at 7:00.
