October 25th - The Lady Panthers ran into conference powerhouse Fontbonne on Wednesday night and suffered a three-set loss 3-15, 3-15, 7-15. Fontbonne, who has lost only one conference game and has a 19-4 record this season, was too much for Greenville to handle despite a strong effort from G.C.
Greenville never really challenged in the first two sets as Fontbonne jumped out to big leads and cruised to a pair of 3-15 victories. "They are an excellent team," remarked Coach Rick McPeak. "They have so many weapons and they played solidly throughout. For us to beat a team like that, we would have to play nearly flawless, but they never gave us anything tonight."
Greenville finally showed a spark in the third set as they came back from a 3-10 defecit to cut the lead to 7-11 before surrendering the final four points for the 7-15 score. Fontbonne never allowed Greenville to get easy points despite some strong offensive efforts from the Panthers. "They dug so many of our shots early that I think it took us out of our game as the match progressed. They showed tonight why they have only lost 4 times this year."
Greenville played a solid match defensively, but couldn't keep up with the firepower that Fontbonne had on the offensive side. Kristi Harms led G.C. with 11 digs and Sarah Swanson and Heather Caddell each had 10 digs. Greenville travels to College of Pharmacy on Thursday for a 7:00 match.
