October 30th - The Greenville Lady Panthers vaulted back into the win column Monday night with a big 15-5, 15-8, 15-7 win over Principia. Prin had defeated Greenville in three sets earlier this year, but there was little doubt who the better team was on Monday.
Right from the start Greenville showed they would play aggressive volleyball as they served tough and used rock solid defense to set up easy opportunities. Sarah Swanson banged out 3 kills early in the set to push the G.C. lead to 7-0. Later in the set fellow outside hitter Michea McKay got locked in as she hammered out four kills late in the game to help Greenville cruise to the 15-5 win. McKay tallied 6 kills on 12 attempts in the set while Swanson had 4 kills on only 6 attacks.
Game two started similarly as Greenville went on the offensive forcing Prin into several mistakes and taking advantage of each opportunity. A 6-2 lead quickly turned into a 12-3 advantage as McKay hammered out 7 more kills in the set including four on her last 5 attempts. Middle hitter Julia Wheeler chipped in with 4 kills on only 6 attacks in the set as Greenville won 15-8.
McKay and Wheeler continued to pick apart the Principia defense in the third and final set as Wheeler had 5 kills on 8 attempts and McKay added 6 kills on only 11 attempts in the 15-7 Greenville win.
"I've said it before that it's the little things that win volleyball games," commented Coach Rick McPeak. "We passed the ball well and we served well tonight and that leads to good volleyball." Outstanding serve receive work from McKay and Swanson, as well as Jamie Hart and Rashell Temples, helped pace the offense as the four primary passers combined for only 4 errors in 50 attempts. "Passing serves is so key to our success," added McPeak. "If we can get into a rhythm with our passing, we start playing really well together and everything runs smoothly."
Freshman outside hitter Michea McKay continued her excellent season as she had 19 kills on the night (19K, 6E, 43AT - .302) and added three serving aces as well. Julia Wheeler hit .400 in the middle (9-3-15) and Sarah Swanson chipped in with 8 kills on the outside. Freshman setter Heather Caddell had another great performance as she assisted on 39 of the team's 46 kills. As a team Greenville hit .261 and committed only 17 hitting errors. Jamie Hart added 3 aces for Greenville who tallied a season high 9 in the match.
Greenville will look to finish the season strong as they host MacMurray on Wednesday night in the final home match of the season and then travel to Harris Stowe on Thursday.
