Webster def. Greenville (3-2)

September 13th - For the third consecutive match, the Greenville Lady Panther volleyball team played a five-game match when they took on Webster Wednesday night. Despite playing one of their best matches of the year in front of a huge home crowd, Greenville was unable to hold off Webster late as they suffered their first defeat in conference play. "That was the most exciting match I think I have ever seen at Greenville," remarked Coach Rick McPeak. "The way we played and the way the crowd was into the whole match was just great."

Greenville came out of the gates slowly on Wednesday as they fell behind 7-1 in the first game. Following a torrid stretch of play that cut the lead to 10-9, Greenville was unable to complete the comeback and fell 15-10. Following the rough start, Greenville put together their best stretch of volleyball of the season in games two and three as they rolled past Webster by scores of 15-4, 15-4. "We really came together in games two and three," added McPeak. "That stretch showed us what our future looks like." Greenville dominated the net in the two games picking up 8 blocks and touching a number of other balls. G.C. had only 6 hitting errors in the two games and controlled the flow of the game throughout. "We were amazing offensively and defensively in those two games," said McPeak. "Julia Wheeler took over at the net again blocking balls and when we didn't get a block we were digging everything."

Unfortunately, Greenville never regained the same intensity from games two and three and fell behind early in game four 10-3. Once again, the Lady Panthers made a comeback bid as they put some pressure back on Webster by cutting the lead to 12-7. With Webster leading 14-8, Greenville simply refused to give away the game as they fought off six game points before finally dropping the game 15-9. In the fifth and final game, G.C. recovered from a slow start to take an 8-6 lead, but Webster's offense was too much late as they took the final game 15-10.

"That's just such a tough match to lose," added McPeak. "Our grit and determination was tremendous. Kristi Harms gave us a huge lift tonight. Her level of intensity made our whole team play better." Harms led the team with 12 digs on defense, while Michea McKay had another big offensive night with 17 kills. Megan Vandiver and Julia Wheeler had excellent matches in the middle for G.C. as Vandiver had 8 kills in just 13 attempts while Wheeler added 9 kills, 3 blocks, and 4 block assists.

Greenville will have a busy weekend as they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Rose Hulman Tournament. Greenville will play at 6:30 and 8:30 on Friday evening and at 10:00 and 12:00 on Saturday morning. "What we need to do as a team is to just gain experience," added McPeak. "This weekend will be good for us to get some more game experience and the only way to do that is to play."
