September 19th - Greenville continued their recent troubles on Tuesday as they dropped a three set match to Maryville 15-7, 15-7, 17-15. The loss was the fifth in six matches for Greenville, but there were more positives than the final score may have indicated. "This is another disappointing loss for us," remarked Coach Rick McPeak, "but we have to be patient at this point in the season. We know it's a long year and we need to focus on improving each time out."
Another slow start doomed the Lady Panthers in game one as they trailed early 3-9 and eventually lost 7-15. Game number two started much better for Greenville as they were tied at 6 and later trailed just 7-9. However, some costly errors and some solid play from Maryville led to six straight points for the home team and gave them a 2-0 lead with the 15-7 victory.
At the beginning of game three, it looked like Maryville would roll to a 3 set win as they took an 11-6 lead into the end of the game. A mini-run from G.C. cut the lead to 12-10, but Maryville jumped right back up to 14-10 and was serving for the match. Greenville was able to sideout three times and then ran off four consecutive points to tie the match at 14. After nearly a dozen consecutive sideouts, mainly from outside hitters Sarah Swanson and Michea McKay, Greenville had their first chance to steal a game from M.U. with a 15-14 lead and control of the serve. A questionable call from the official gave Maryville a crucial sideout, and more importantly some momentum, as they were able to score the final three points for the 17-15 win.
Despite the loss, the outside hitters for Greenville were outstanding. "Michea (McKay) and Sarah (Swanson) were great for us tonight," said McPeak. "Michea was very strong offensively at the net and Sarah had a great all-around match for us tonight." McKay led the team with 16 kills, while Swanson had 13 kills and only 3 hitting errors (.263) on the night. "Sarah was just remarkable all night for us," added McPeak. "She was consistent on offense, played outstanding defense, and received serve as well as she has all year." To go along with her 13 kills, Swanson had a team high 21 digs on defense while also handling the majority of the serve receive duties.
As mentioned, the loss was the fifth in the past six matches for Greenville, but McPeak is confident in what he has seen and what the rest of the year has to offer. "We know we can beat all of these teams," commented McPeak. "It's going to take more than just ability though. We need to continue to work on reacting and anticipating, and then we will start winning more matches. I really look forward to seeing these teams later in the year because I am confident that we can beat them if we play to our potential."
Greenville will have a chance to get back on the winning track as they begin a long homestand starting on Wednesday. Over the next 10 days, Greenville will play 6 home matches, including rematches against Illinois College and Rose Hulman. The homestand begins Wednesday night when Greenville hosts Lincoln Christian at 7:00 p.m.
