Fontbonne def. Greenville (3-0)
15-9, 15-11, 15-1
(9/21/00 at Greenville)

September 21st - After a huge win Wednesday night versus Lincoln Christian College, Greenville ran into a very strong Fontbonne team and fell in three games 15-9, 15-11, 15-1. Despite a great early effort from the Panthers, they were unable to contain the powerful offense of Fontbonne and could never quite get into an offensive rhythm.

Greenville came firing out of the gates as they jumped to a very fast 8-1 lead. After a Fontbonne timeout, the visitors were able to make several key adjustments both offensively and defensively and slowly crept back into the game. Greenville never returned to their early form as Fontbonne ran off 14 of the last 15 points to win 15-9. "We were really ready to play early tonight," remarked Coach Rick McPeak. "We came out aggressive and confident, but when they made adjustments, we lost our consistency and never recovered."

Game two was another closely contested battle, but Greenville trailed throughout by three points. With the Lady Panthers trailing 8-11, they put on a mini-run to tie the score at 11 and force a Fontbonne timeout. Fontbonne fired out of the timeout with three straight points to push the lead to 14-11. Greenville fought off five set points, but were never able to put any more points on the board as they dropped the set 15-11. After dropping the first two games, Greenville seemed to lose some confidence as Fontbonne rolled right through them in game three 15-1.

"We saw how well we can play against a really good team, but we also saw how easy it is to fall behind and not be able to get back into it," added McPeak. "They were a great team, and that's the reason they are now 9-1. It's a good measuring stick for us early in the year to know that we can play right with them. We just need to put that kind of effort in for an entire game."

The win pushed Fontbonne's record to 9-1, including a big win over last year's SLIAC champion Westminster. Sarah Swanson had a very solid night for Greenville as she played consistently throughout from the outside. "Sarah was just great again tonight," added McPeak. "She serve received very well and she provided very consistent offense and defense." Swanson finished the night with 9 kills and only 2 hitting errors (.389) and added 12 digs on defense.

Greenville will look to bounce back with a Saturday home match against Harris Stowe. The match begins at 1:00 in HJ Long Gymnasium.
