Millikin def. Greenville (3-0)
7-15, 11-15, 5-15
(9/5/00 at Millikin University)

September 5th - The Greenville Lady Panthers opened their season with what may turn out to be their most difficult match of the year when they traveled to Decatur, Illinois to take on Millikin University. Greenville fell in three games by a score of 7-15, 11-15, 5-15, but played well enough to receive some praise from Head Coach Rick McPeak. "You always take a risk when you schedule a team like Millikin, especially to start off the season," commented McPeak. "That's a team that went 35-4 last season, and our girls came in and played right with them."

The match started rough for Greenville as they fell behind 11-0 early in the first game despite some pretty good play. "I thought we hit the ball well and played pretty good defense in that game, but they were just tough to score on," added McPeak. M.U. was extremely efficient offensively as they recorded 8 kills in their first 14 attack attempts to stretch the lead to 11-0. G.C. fought back with some offense of their own and finished the game on a 7-4 run, but fell 15-7.

Game two started much like game one finished with both teams playing very good volleyball. After falling behind early, Greenville came back to tie the score at 6-6 and later at 8-8, but a rough stretch late in the game was too much to overcome as they dropped the game 15-11. Once again, Millikin put together a torrid offensive stretch, closing out game number two with 7 kills in their final 12 attacks. M.U. was able to keep the momentum in game three as they rolled to a 15-5 score to finish off Greenville in three games.

"We really showed our youth tonight at times," remarked McPeak "but I was really excited to see that there were times when we played right with them, and even outplayed them. You have to look at it as an opportunity to play a high quality NCAA Division III team because that's what we want to be in the future. And I think we can get there with this team." As expected, several freshmen played key roles in their first college match. Sarah Swanson led the team in kills with 7, while setter Heather Caddell had 4 kills and 11 assists. Michea McKay led the team defensively with 11 digs, and junior co-captain Lindsay Hairrell added 6 digs as well. Greenville will continue their busy week with a trip to Lindenwood on Wednesday for a 6:00 start time.
