September 1st - The 2000 Greenville College Women's Volleyball Team is filled with youth, but don't think that this is a rebuilding year. Greenville expects to win this year thanks to a very strong recruiting class that includes six freshmen on the twelve person roster. Anchoring the team will be veteran starters from last year including Senior Defensive Specialist Rashell Temples, Sophomore Opposite Lindsay Hairrell, and Senior Middle Hitter Julia Wheeler. Temples and Hairrell are this year's co-captains, while Wheeler will look to back up her best season of collegiate volleyball from one year ago in which she led the team in hitting percentage and was named Offensive Player of the Year.
The offense will be run through a trio of freshmen this season as local Greenville standout Michea McKay and New York native Sarah Swanson will start at outside hitter in the opener and will handle the serve receive duties while freshman Heather Caddell will start at setter for the Lady Panthers. Hairrell, a second semester sophomore, will start at Opposite where she was named "Rookie of the Year" last year. As mentioned, Julia Wheeler will start in the middle and will be joined by three freshmen - Valerie Watson, Megan Vandiver, and Meredith McDaniels. Senior Rashell Temples and Junior Jamie Hart will anchor this year's defense as defensive specialists. With the emergence of this year's freshman class, the reserves will have plenty of experience to provide off the bench. Sophomore Kristi Harms will back up at setter, and will also see time at opposite while senior Amy Woolston will add much needed depth at outside hitter.
Religion Professor Rick McPeak returns for his second season as Head Coach and will be assisted by Greenville native Tom Ackerman, recent G.C. graduate Patrick Cork, and Steve Pamperin on the bench. Ackerman, a 1999 G.C. graduate, is in his fourth season with the Lady Panther program and brings a tremendous amount of skill and experience to the team. Cork, who graduated last May, is in his first season with the program and Steve Pamperin is also a new addition to the coaching staff. Greenville will open the season on the road at Millikin on September 5th, and will play their first home match on Tuesday, September 12th when they host the College of Pharmacy.
