WhosNext 1.0 Beta for the PC/Mac

What: WhosNext is designed to replace most of the note taking that Game Masters have to do when running combat. Namely, rolling inititive and keeping track of damage for multiple characters. WhosNext is intended to be a generic utility usable with any role playing game.  Except the ones with weird dice rolls, like Storyteller games.
Where: You can down load WhosNext here. But you'll also need the Java Runtime Environment 1.4 from Sun Microsystems.
  1. Download and install the  JRE
  2. Download WhosNext . No fancy install utility. Just put WhosNext.jar in it's own directory.
  3. Now you should be able to start WhosNext by double clicking on it's icon. The first time it runs it creates the directories and files that it needs.
Directions:
File Menu:
"Open..." opens sets of characters that you've prevously saved.
"Save..." saves the current set of characters in a file.
"Import..." opens a set of characters from a file and adds them to the characters already open. I suggest that you save the player characters as one set and the encounter in a diffrent set. Then all you have to do is Open the file with the PC's, Import the encounter and you're ready to go.
"New..." clears the display and opens a new character form.
"Exit..." shuts down WhosNext.

Character Menu:
"Add..." brings up a form with elements for all the data for a character. You need to give a character a Name. But everything else is optional and will default to 0 if you leave it blank.
"Modify..." same as add except that it removes the highlighted character from the list and imports it's information into the form.
"Copy..." opens the from with the data from the highlighted character. "Remove..." removes the highlighted character from the list.

Settings Menu:
"Change" brings up a window with the info that you can customise. If "go again in" is checked and given a number, "x", then when initive is rolled every character will belisted for their inititive minus "x" until 0. If you play Shadowrun you know what this means.
'Field 1, 2, 3' allow you to rename the damage field names.
"Open" and "Save" are for opening and saveing the settings. So if you run d20 and GURPS on alternating Sundays then you can save the settings for the two diffrent games and never have to alter them again.

Size Menu:
Changes the length of the display. Rolling Inititive:
There are three ways to roll inititive.
  1. Click the roll button
  2. Hit the 'Enter' key
  3. Use the down arrow key to cycle thru the list. When you get to the last character in the list, hit the down arrow one more time and WhosNext will re-roll and sort the inititives and highlight the first character. The highlighting lets you keep track of whos turn it is.
Doing Damage:
Here's how you change the amount of damage a character has taken. 1) Select the character name from the pulldown menu at the bottom of the screen. (It doesn't have to be the highlighted character.) 2) select the damage field you want to effect from the next pulldown menu. Numbered 123 from left to right. 3) If you're doing damage to the character click the next box until shows a minus sign, or a plus sign for healing. 4) Enter the amount you want to change the damage field by. 5) click the Bash! button.

Price: I'm not setting a price on WhosNext. You pay what you feel it's worth. What you have is the full version, and it won't nag you at start-up. Send payment, suggestions and bug reports to Tone Milazzo at gdsware@yahoo.com. Payment accepted though PayPal
