So far, we've discussed the Chicago Manual of Style's approach
to ellipsis points. Other style guides for more-specialized audiences have
different standards. The Modern Language Association of America's MLA Style
Sheet governs style in academic writings associated with the humanities. It
decrees that writers should use "three spaced periods" to signify
ellipsis within a sentence, including a space before the first period. An
omission of text following the conclusion of a complete sentence is indicated
by four spaced periods, but with no space before the first period. If whole
paragraphs are omitted between portions of a block quote, the MLA Style Sheet
advises that the writer may indicate the magnitude of the omission by interposing
"a single typed line of spaced periods."
