The General Care of
the White's Tree Frog
(Litoria Caerulea)
Written by David Beard
Animal Summary- White's make really good beginners frogs, have great temperaments (the only frog that doesn't is the Pacman Frog), are low maintenance and have great personalities.
Caging- For a adult white's you will need a minimum ten gallon aquarium(no wire cages. They can harm they're delicate skin and don't jold in humidity). For every frog you have you need another ten gallons to a tank (three frogs, thirty gallon tank). You can keep White's together if they are the same size, if not seperate them.
Caging Accessories- A couple of thick, clean pieces of wood, sticks, ect. DO NOT USE ACCESSSORIES TAKEN FROM OUTDOORS!!! They can carry deadly parasites. Buy the acc. at your local pet store. It may be a little expensive, but it's worth it. You can use live plants if you want but I don't recommend them for White's because they are very clumsy and will most likely tear up all plants.I use sturdy, easy to clean plastic plants. DO NOT USE WILD PLANTS!!! Only store bought.
Lighting- I use a Vita Lite for my frog. They are the best on the market. (they provide the best souce of full spectrum lighting next to sun). I would not recommend putting the cage near a window, as the large amounts of sunlight can dry out their skin.
Heating-The two best ways of hetaing your frog is under tank heaters, or small heat lamps(in a basking area).
Water- I just use a daily changed bowl of water. You can buy good quality water bowls at pet stores.
Feeding- I feed my frog once a day or every other day. I
feed him two-four large (if an adult frog, if a baby or juvenile, feedsmall crickets) crickets every feeding. It's not a neccessity but it sure doesn't hurt- you can dust the crickets with calcium powder before feeding them to the frog. You can Gut-Load the crickets, too.
Cleaning: Just rinse out the cage every week or if it
starts to smell. Clean all water bowels, cage accessories, ect. THIS IS CRITICAL! IF YOU DON'T CHANGE WATER DAILY, CLEAN CAGE, YOU WILL NOT LIKE THE RESULTS!!! (I had a bad experience with something called Redleg, a lesion causing bacterial infection that is most of the time not curable. I was lucky).
One Last Thing...- Enjoy you're frog and take care of him/her. You will get lots of enjoyment out of it!!!! If you have any questions, e-mail me at vladherp@hotmail.com
