Edgar & Co.
Coach Edgar was a computer science teacher that many of us had in high school. There were three things that stood out about Edgar: 1) his copious amounts underarm sweat that would produce amazingly vast sweat rings on his shirts, 2) his quick temper, and 3) his sidekick (and daughter) Jennie. Firstly, the sweat rings. Anthony and Raymond had many jokes involving this topic, but suffice it to say that Edgar's sweat stains were gargantuan and must truly be witnessed firsthand in order to fully comprehend their true power. Secondly, Edgar's temper. Coach Edgar was a pretty laid-back, easy-going guy until for some acutely bizarre reason, "the line" had been crossed. Before delving further, some background information on the layout of Edgar's class must be known. It was divided into two rooms separated by one door. The first room was the classroom. It contained the overhead projector (which played a large contributing role in the formation of the sweat rings), the desks, and about 8 IBM PS-2's: a.k.a. really lame, old-school computers with no hard drive and two 3.5" floppy drives. The second room (in the back) was the "computer lab," which held the majority of the computers (also PS-2's) and was therefore where most students did their work. Because of the two room setup, Edgar often found himself walking between the two rooms to answer questions about the current assignment, and would often answer the same question repeatedly. This was the most common reason for Edgar's temper to flair out of control. "QUIET PLEEEAAASE!!!" was usually yelled by Edgar right before giving an announcement to the class, and was emulated in numerous Edgar-related inside jokes by Raymond and Anthony. Once, Edgar got so mad that he hit the door that separated the two rooms. An act that looked proved so hilarious, that Raymond and Anthony would spend the rest of the day laughing about it. (Of course, they held in their laughter until after Edgar had left the room) Also, Edgar had a daughter named Jennie, who was the same age as Anthony, Chang, and Raymond (3 main characters that were taking Edgar's class at this time). It was rumored that Jennie was the offspring of Edgar and a PS-2, or something of that nature. (There was definitely a "connection" between the Edgars and the computers) One inside joke was that Jennie was a spy for her father. It was really funny at the time, but I can't remember specifically why... Edgar's class will also be remembered for the baronistic combination of the constant dot-matrix printer background noise, coupled with the annoying spring-loaded clicking of the IBM keyboards. One random note: the programming language that we learned in Edgar's class was "Turbo Pascal." (Not to be confused with "plain Pascal") Notable Edgar quote: "Don't forget your Writeln(P)'s!!" |
