Part pop, part rock, and part rhythm and blues, Uhm Jung Hwa's music defies easy definition. Since 1997, however, she has been a constant influence on the Korean dance music scene. Unlike many of the teen-idol pop sirens in Korea, Jung Hwa's music is passionate, soulful, and sometimes unexpectedly dark. Her song, "Cross", reminds me of the pop-star media overload expressed in Gary Numan's "Cars". And for a popular star, she is fairly humble and down-to-earth in interviews. Uhm Jung Hwa's greatest hits album, "All Details", provides a good introductory cross-section to her music. It ranges from ballads to dance, lighthearted to dark and moody. Consistent throughout, however, is an energetic approach to music that will keep her well-established in the dance music scene for some time to come. |
