Children Born of Pumpkin

Once upon a time there were a man and a woman. They were living alone. They did not have any children. Once the woman told the man:

‘Man, go and take a pumpkin from the market!’

The man said:

‘Will we have enough money?’

‘We will, at least for one pumpkin. Go and take one, we will bake it and eat it.’

The man went to the market and bought a pumpkin. They lighted a fire and put the pumpkin. It became red. Suddenly it broke and small, small children came out of the pumpkin – nice boys and girls.

The woman started to cry from happiness. The man asked her:

‘Woman, what shall we do with these children? What shall we feed them with?

‘Do not worry, husband, we might be poor but we will find flour for a loaf of bread!’

She made a big and taste piece of bread. She baked it and broke it to piece. Each of the children took one. Finally there was no one left for the man. He became angry and started to beat the children. They got frightened. One of them hid under the bed, the other one in the cupboard, they hid wherever they found place. And after this they ran far away.

The woman started to cry:

‘Why did you beat the children?! Let your hands dry! What did the children do to you? Why did you beat them?!’

Suddenly, while the woman was crying, a child who was hiding in the oven shouted:

‘Mummy, Mummy, do not cry, I am here!’

The child came out of the oven. The woman started to cry again but this time from happiness. The dressed the kid, provided it with shoes and took it as a blood daughter.

Time passed, the girl grew up. She married to a rich man and they made a luxurious wedding. They made a new house for the old people, gave them land and animals. The son-in-law bought everything for them. They started to live well. They are still living well…
