A Story about the Mad and Smart Brothers

Once upon a time there were two brothers, a smart one and a mad one. They went to the forest. They met two Turkish men carrying incense and golden coins on their donkeys. The mad brother beat them, took the incense the coins and the donkeys and they went on.

The night became and they became cold. They made a fire. The smart brother told the mad one:

‘Lets not put the incense in the fire, the woods are enough. The smell will spread far away and they will easily find us.’

But the mad brother threw the incense into the fire. The smell spread far away. Soon after this they heard the horses of their persecutors.

‘Brother, let’s climb on the tree!’ – the mad brother cried frightened.

‘Let’s climb but leave the golden coins and the incense here on the ground. The persecutors will think that we have run away. They will take the goods and leave us alone!’

The mad brother however took the two bags with him on the tree. The Turkish came and sat near the fire. Suddenly the mad brother whispered:

‘Brother, it is heavy, I will drop down the incense!’

‘Do not do this, mad man, do not! The Turkish will kill us, they will slaughter us!’

But the mad man dropped the bag. The Turkish looked and started to shout happily:

‘There is incense falling from God! There is incense falling from God!’

A little bit later the mad man whispered again:

‘Brother, the gold is heavy, I will drop it!’

‘Do not do this, mad man, do not! The Turkish will kill us, they will slaughter us!’

But the mad brother dropped the bag again.

‘There is gold falling from God! There is gold falling from God!’ – one of the Turkish started to shout.

‘Stop it! – the other one cried to him. – Don’t you see these are our bags!’

They looked up and what to see – the mad and the smart brother were hiding in the tree. The smart one got angry and pushed the mad brother from the tree.

‘He is falling from his head, not from God!’ – the smart brother cried and ran away while the Turkish were beating the mad one.
