Bashnuv Day

Long time ago the Turkish decided to wipe out the Roma genus – no children, no boys. They went from door to door and wherever they found a boy they killed him.

A woman had a three-year-old son. She wondered how to save him. She took a cock and slaughtered him. She spread its blood upon the door. The soldiers came, saw the blood on the door, and said:

‘They have already been here. There is no boy any more!’

Thus the boy was saved.

That is why we celebrate Bashnuv Day, because we, the Roma, have been always chased. Even the Germans made us on soap but we have survived.

The Myth about the People

First God created the people from mud. But just like the pottery need to be baked the people also had to be baked to become people. God lighted a big fire, but it was too strong and the first people God put into the fire became black as tar. These were the black people.

Then he put another group of people and was very careful not to burn them. He took them too early and they became white as mud-bricks. These were the white people.

God put a third group of people into the fire. This time he baked them just as was need – like chocolate. These were the Roma people. That’s why God loves them very much.

The Gypsies through the Red Sea

King Darij was the Roma king. He lived long time ago, in ancient times when people were fighting each other. King Darij decided to take Roma People to a save place in order to prevent them from being innocent victims. So they approached the Red Sea. They stopped frightened in front of the endlessness of the sea but they did not know where to go. Then Darij asked God:

‘Please, Lord, help us to go through the sea!’

God heard his prayers and opened a path through the sea. All the people were stuck with the miracle! Darij told the people with the pride typical for a king:

‘I go first, God comes after us!’

Hearing this God became angry. When Darij and his chiefs reached the middle of the sea, God put the two sides of the sea together again. As a result Darij and his chiefs drowned and the Roma people spread all over the world. God punished them for their lordliness never to have a state and a king.
