Stories of the Bakardjii from the Village of Kardam,
Popovo Region, retold by Kosta Stoyanov

We were nomadic people in the past. We came here in Kardam in 1963 from the region of Vidin. Our ancestors came from Hungary, the town of Predida. We used to travel all the time, the whole family. We used carts, we did not have cars. At the beginning of the winter we hired several houses in some village and spent the night there. But when it became warm – we harnessed the horses, took the tents and went again from a village to a village. We did not let March find us settled. So we traveled the spring, the summer, and the autumn through Dobrudja to find work, from one village to another to earn money for the winter.

We are Roma, we speak Romanes and we are proud that we are Roma. A man should not try to run away of his origin – the Bulgarian is Bulgaria, the Turkish is Turkish, the Roma is Roma.

We have our own Roma court – meshere (Kris Romani). If somebody of us steals or commits a crime we do not go to the court. We gather our meshere – three or five elderly men. They decide what to do him: whether to pay fine or not, how much. The most important is not to repeat the bad deed again.

We have an elderly man as well. When we came here my brother Bay Yordan was the elderly man. Now it is me.

We are Orthodox Christians. We have always been Orthodox Christians, we are not recently baptized. Our belief is strong and we do not betray it!
