Women also supplemented their families' diet s by collecting a wide array of edible wild plants from the forest. Berries, mushrooms, nuts, milkweed greens , wild onions, and asparagus are just a few of the things that Iroquois cooks mixed with wild game and cultivated foods .

Food was not always plentiful for the Iroquois. During hard times when food was almost impossible to find they would boil their moccasins for soup or chew on their clothing.

asparagus-

a plant you can eat (see the picture)



boil-

to cook something in hot, bubbling water



cultivated foods-

food that is grown for eating



diet-

food and drink



edible-

anything that can be eaten



hard times-

times when it is hard to get what you need to survive, like food





milkweed greens-

the leaves of the milkweed plant



 

moccasins-


soft leather shoes



supplemented-

added something to it



wide array-
       
many different kinds



wild game-

wild animals that are hunted for food, like deer and turkey
