Name: Shinji Ikari
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Occupation: Student and Evangelion pilot

Profile: Shinji is the 3rd child, according to the Marduk Report. He is the pilot of EVA Unit 01, which is the Test-Type model. He has been separated from his father for 10 years, and he does not get along with him well even after he becomes involved with the NERV program. He was witness to his own mother's death/disappearance during an EVA-Synchronization Test when he was still a small child. Called back to his father, he is ordered to become the Pilot of EVA Unit 01, but he hates to pilot them, mostly out of his own sense of self-pity for what he is doing. His personality can best be described as: quiet, gentle, kind, passive, and introverted. However due to the influences of those around him, he has become more sociable, and interacts better with others as the series goes on. The pain of separation and loneliness, however, is still evident in his actions and feelings.

Detailed Information: Shinji is tortured throughout the series by not being able to make his own decisions but rather makes them based on the perceptions of others. In the end of the series, however, he makes the choice to become his own individual, after battling with his own self-image. He chooses not to merge with the rest of humanity during the Third Impact (in End of Evangelion) and this was a major step for him to show that he was capable of making his own decisions in regards to his life.

Shinji does not feel that he was loved by anyone until he comes to live with Misato Katsuragi, who teaches him that he is wanted and loved. The first time that he shows a notable amount of happiness is when his father praises him after defeating the 10th angel Sahaquiel. However, he is not happy to be a part of NERV, and in fact, he resigns twice, but returns a third time to continue piloting EVA Unit 01. It is after this third time that we see that his decision is truly what he wants to do, and not what he feels obligated to do.

Shinji has many downfalls in the series, but his largest downfall starts when he loses his will to live after having to kill his friend, Kaworu Nagisa, who turns out to be Tabris, the 17th angel. However, he does not feel that he can take his own life. He is the one that discovers that fellow pilot Rei Ayanami is a clone, and that his own mother's image is a part of her, a result of his father Gendo's own twisted attempt at bringing back his lost wife. As a result of finding this out, he avoids her as much as possible after that point. Shinji also realizes that his lost mother's soul has been encapsulated into the organic machine of EVA Unit 01, something which at many points in the series comes into play to save Shinji from harm.

TOP

Name: Rei Ayanami
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Occupation: Student and Evangelion pilot

Profile: Rei is the 1st child. She is the pilot of EVA Unit 00, which is the Proto-Type Model. There is not much information or personal history for her. All the files on her in the NERV computer system have been erased. Her personality is very quiet and shy. Rei is silent most of the time, mostly talking only when she is talked to. She very rarely shows any emotions. However she does show an emotional attachment to Gendou Ikari, father of Shinji.

Detailed Information: Rei is the result of an experiment that combined Angel DNA with that of Yui Ikari, Shinji's mother, an experiment conducted by Gendo Ikari. She is very literally the backbone of the NERV Dummy Plug System, an automatic method of running EVAs without pilots. Rei was the test subject for most of NERV's experiments that had to do with the Human Instrumentality Project and Project E. She also embodies Gendo's own plans for making the Third Impact into something which makes him a god, with the rest of mankind at his feet.

Rei is a clone, with many different forms of the same body stored deep underground in NERV's base. The different incarnations of Rei have all had differing experiences even though they are essentially the same person. The first Rei clone was first killed in 2010 by Naoko Akagi, when she was still 9. The second clone and death came when the Rei killed herself to save Shinji's life during a battle with Armisael, the 16th Angel, (who appeared in episode number twenty-three), to prevent it from fusing with EVA Unit 01. This self-destruction caused also the destruction of Tokyo-3. The third clone and death came when Rei merged with Lilith and completed the steps needed to cause the Third Impact in the End of Evangelion movie. As the progression of clones continues, each new one is less willing to interact on a social and emotional level with those around her. The first two show affection towards Gendo Ikari but the third clone is the one that will betray him to allow the completion of the version of the Third Impact that goes against his orders, so that the format that he wanted the Third Impact to occur in does not happen.

Japanese Voice Actor: Megumi Hayashibara
American Voice Actor: Amanda Winn-Lee

TOP

Name: Asuka Langley Soryu
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Occupation: Student and Evangelion pilot

Profile: Asuka is the 2nd child, according to the Marduk Report. She is the pilot of the EVA Unit 02, which is the German Production Model, and the intended first "mass produced" model of EVA. Her father abandoned her, running off to marry a doctor. Her mother suffered from psychological poisoning from a failed EVA-Synchronization Test and later committed suicide when Asuka was only 4 years old. Her foster mother was her Aunt on her mother's side.

Asuka is a child genius, having completed college, and is only going to Junior High to have something to do when she is not piloting her EVA Unit. She traveled to Tokyo 3 with Ryoji Kaji, who she has a crush on, and ended up with Shinji to be the first pilots to ever test an EVA in underwater combat.

Asuka is a very highly motivated person. She hates losing, especially to Shinji, who she feels ais a foolish boy. Her strong personality was a result of her very troubled past and very unstable childhood. Asuka does not get along with Rei Ayanami well; this is in part due to her relationship with her mother after she had gone crazy. Rei's somewhat cold attitude does not mix with Asuka's brash personality very well.

Detailed Information: Asuka has a lot of energy that she often has trouble directing well. As a result she often seems to have a powerful, overbearing personality that is highly competitive and self-centered. Asuka suffered a psychological "mind-rape" attack by the 15th angel, causing her to lose her abiity to effectively sync with EVA Unit 02, and as a result also lost confidence in herself both physically and mentally, entering a near-catatonic state of self-pity and loathing. It wasn't until (the movie) REBIRTH that she recovered and started piloting again. It is after this recovery that she fights to protect NERV Head Quarters during the attack by the Japan Strategy Self Defense Force (JSSDF), who sought to destroy NERV under false pretenses of conspiracy to eliminate mankind. Battling against overwhelming odds and new types of EVA units with limitless energy, Asuka fights bravely, only to fall to the more advanced EVA units. This is also where her fate comes into question, as it is not clear if she dies in that attack, or remains with Shinji Ikari on earth, after his decision to end the Third Impact.

Japanese Voice Actor: Miyamura Yuko
American Voice Actor: Tiffany Grant

TOP

Name: Gendo Ikari
Age: 48
Gender: Male
Occupation: NERV Commander

Profile: Gendo is the commander of NERV. With his cold, calculating personality, and his seeming lack of desire for human contact, he has carved a path to achieve his goals by using and manipulating people. His coldness even extends to his own son, Shinji, who he abandoned at a young age. As a result, Shinji has hated him ever since. However, Gendo has had considerable success as the commander of NERV and has made great strides in accomplishing its purpose. He follows the orders of SEELE, the ruling organization that NERV reports to, but he has his own agenda as well. Gendo calls Shinji back only to get him to pilot EVA-01 against an Angel attack, which, due to the injuries to Rei, he is forced to do. Gendo's only semblance of emotion seems to concern Rei, who he treats even better than Shinji.

Detailed Information: Gendo was not always the cold and unfeeling person that he is today. He loved his wife Yui dearly, and together they worked on the beginnings of the Evangelion project. However, after a tragic accident in which Yui disappeared in the first Evangelion test, Gendo changed. Denying his wife's death, Gendo began using and manipulating people to get ahead and achieve his goal of becoming God. He created Rei and the Rei clones in the likeness of his own wife, which may explain his emotional attachment to Rei. He also had romantic affairs with both Naoko Akagi, Head Researcher of Gehirn (NERV's predecessor) and Ritsuko Akagi, her daughter and Head Researcher of NERV. His callousness and disregard for human life also got Toji seriously injured as he ignored his plight, forcing Evangelion Unit-01 to tear apart the angel that was Evangelion Unit-03. Gendo personally was responsible for the suffering of many people, and did not care about it - until he attempted to merge with Rei to begin the Third Impact and failed. It was only then that he realized his selfishness, and before being absorbed, apologized to Shinji for all his past actions.

American Voice Actor: Tristan MacAvery

TOP

Name: Misato Katsuragi
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Occupation: NERV operations director

Profile: Misato is a Captain of NERV, and the head of Operations. Fiery and headstrong, yet very efficient in battle, Misato's tactical decisions are oftentimes risky, but on target, especially where the Angels are concerned. She is the one who first meets up with Shinji in order to take him to where he is needed to pilot EVA-01 into its first battle, and eventually becomes his caretaker, taking him into her apartment. She also eventually has Asuka, the pilot of EVA-02 move in with her as well, in order to promote better pilot synchronization. Misato also knows about her obvious beauty and is not afraid to flaunt it. However, she is secretly quite disorganized and a slob when it comes to her home, and she is also a notorious beer-drinker - something which Shinji disdains. Misato may have picked up these habits from her college days, where she attended school with Kaji and Ritsuko.

Detailed Information: Misato had a romantic and very intense relationship with Kaji when she was in college, but they eventually broke up when she left him. She eventually gets back together with him when they reunite in Japan. Misato is promoted to Major for her efficient work - however, she is constantly criticized by Ritsuko for being very risky in her plans, some of which may be motivated by personal hatred towards the Angels. Misato is the only one of the research team sent to the Antarctic to survive the discovery of Adam, the first Angel, and the Second Impact. She was only allowed to do so because her father, who she hated at the time for loving his work more than his family, locked her in a secure capsule. Misato still received a deadly permanent scar across her side from the experience, and due to the shock of witnessing Second Impact, was mute for several years following the incident. She was eventually released after much psychological treatment. Though Kaji was shot dead, Misato was still given the means to try and discover the truth about the Angels, much of which had been kept from her by Gendo and Ritsuko. Misato ends up sacrificing herself to protect Shinji, as she was shot during the invasion of NERV by the JSSDF.

Japanese Voice Actor: Kitono Mitsuishi
American Voice Actor: Alison Keith

TOP

Name: Ritsuko Akagi
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Occupation: NERV head technician

Profile: Ritsuko Akagi is the Head Researcher for NERV, and one of Kaji and Misato's closest friends. She is responsible for the maintenance of the MAGI computer system that is currently in use by NERV and other organizations around the world. The MAGI system is composed of three supercomputers programmed with different ways of thinking, and her mother Naoko's personality, divided into that of a woman, a mother, and a scientist, is the one that is programmed into the MAGI machines. She is also responsible for the maintenance and continuing research into the EVA project and marks its progress with regards to its pilots. Ritsuko's relationship with Kaji and Misato goes all the way back to when they all went to college at Tokyo-2. Ritsuko also harbors a strong dislike towards her mother.

Detailed Information: Ritsuko, like her mother Naoko, got into a romantic relationship with Gendo Ikari, the head of NERV, and did many unscrupulous things, such as sabotage a competing robot to NERV's Evangelions, and withhold secrets even from her close friend, because of this relationship. However, like her mother, Ritsuko ended up finding out that she was merely a pawn in Gendo's plan to become God. Angry at this, Ritsuko destroyed the rest of the Rei clones, who she hated for their resemblance to Yui, and was imprisoned for her insubordination. Ritsuko was later released to stop a cyber-attack by SEELE's hackers on NERV's MAGI system, and tried to kill Gendo before he completed Third Impact. However, she could not bring herself to do so, and Gendo shot her dead as a result of it.

TOP

Name: Toji Suzuhara
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Occupation: Student and Evangelion pilot

Profile: Toji is a classmate of the EVA pilots, and is also a frind of Kensuke Aida and Shinji Ikari. His sister is injured in the angel attack by Sachiel, the Angel that attacks Tokyo-3 in the first episode. Ever since then, he has visited her in the hospital. Both of his parents work in the research facility of NERV. He has a very hot-blooded personality, and at first does not get along with Shinji Ikari, because he was piloting the EVA Unit that fought Sachiel's attack. Eventually, however, he warms up to Shinji and is able to give Shinji some measure of companionship in the series.

Detailed Information: Toji's first encounter with Shinji Ikari is not a pleasant one, due to the injury to his sister during the angel attack. In fact, he beats up the passive Shinji in order to feel better about himself and his inability to save his sister during the attack. However, he changes his view of Shinji after experiencing being in the middle of an angel attack and riding in EVA Unit 01, rescued by a selfless Shinji who suffers on his behalf.

Toji eventually becomes the 4th child, according to the Marduk Report, and attempts to pilot EVA Unit-03, the American Production Model. He agrees to become the 4th child so that is sister can be cared for by NERV's special hospital that is within the geofront. His first battle is his last one, because his EVA Unit 03 is infected with the 13th angel Bardiel. Unable to control his EVA, Toji injures both Rei and Asuka before facing off against Shinji. It is in this battle that EVA Units 01 and 03 are forced to fight each other, and when Shinji refuses to kill Toji even though it may cost him his life, Gendo forces EVA Unit-01 to activate the experimental Dummy Plug system, an automatic failsafe alternative to EVA Pilots. The unemotional Dummy Plug System, unbound by morals or ethics, svagely tears EVA Unit-03 apart, even crushing the entry plug that Toji was in. This results in Toji losing his left arm and leg, and emotional damage to both him and especially Shinji, who is forced to watch helpless inside his EVA throughout the whole incident. It is after that point that he discovers fellow classmate Hikari Horaki's crush on him and learns to love her as well. He, like the rest of humanity, evolves to a higher existence during the Third Impact.

He camps outside at times to practice his survival training, often alone. He carries around with him a video camera that he uses to tape what he can, specifically of the battles between the EVAs and the Angels.

Detailed Information: Both of his parents work in the NERV research facility, wher ethey are scientists intimately involved with the EVA project and the happenings of the organization. Kensuke has always wanted to be an EVA Pilot, but never became one, even though all the members of his class were potentially EVA pilot material. Name: Hikari Horaki
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Occupation: Student

Profile: Hikari is the class representative in Shinji, Asuka, Toji, Rei, and Kensuke's class. She is strong-willed, independant, and isn't afraid to use her limited authority in order to keep order in the class (with varying results). Her and Asuka forge somewhat of a close bond because of her personality, and she stands up for Asuka when necessary. Though she isn't quite sure what to make of the Evangelion pilots at first, she eventually comes to accept them.

Detailed Information: Hikari develops a crush on Toji, supposedly because she has seen his "gentle" side, and she begins to offer to make him lunch since he is unable to get any free time to do so (due to visiting his injured sister in the hospital). Hikari eventually does make lunch for Toji, but by this time, Shinji and EVA-01 have already seriously injured Toji (as he was the unwitting victim of an Angel that possessed his EVA). Hikari still goes to visit Toji in the hospital, and eventually takes on the job of caring for Toji's sister as well.

American Voice Actor: Carol Amerson

Name: Kouzou Fuyutsuki
Age: 58
Gender: Male
Occupation: NERV Commander

Profile: Fuyutsuki is the second in command of NERV, second only to Gendo Ikari. He is an experienced tactician, but he is also a very educated man, and the professor who originally taught Yui Ikari, Gendo's eventual wife. Not nearly as cold and unfeeling as his superior, Fuyutsuki is nevertheless heavily loyal to Gendo and his ideals. He is also privy to much of what Gendo knows, and has been with the organization since it was originally known as Gehirn.

Detailed Information: Fuyutsuki first met Gendo and his Gehirn associates just before the Second Impact. He disliked Gendo and his arrogance at first, but upon seeing the work that was being done on the Evangelions and the project after the Second Impact, he decided to put his faith in what Gendo was trying to do. It can also be said that he may or may not have had romantic inclinations towards Yui, as the two spent quite a bit of time together in doing work in college.

Detailed Information: Kaji dated Misato in the past - in fact, Kaji resumes his romantic relationship with Misato shortly after he returns with Asuka from Germany. His personality is best described as cunning, humorous, light-hearted, and slick with women, but he also is someone who hides his motives and information from others. Name: Kaoru Nagisa
Age: 14

Name: Yui Ikari
Age: N/A(deceased)
Gender: Female
Occupation: NERV scientist

Profile: Not much is known about Yui Ikari. She was Shinji's mother, and married to Gendo Ikari in an arrangement where he took the last name of her family rather than her taking his. She died during one of the first synchronization tests of the EVA Units in 2004. She was a very smart woman, who wrote a thesis in college on bio-technology that was used by Gehirn/NERV. When she was the University, one of her professors was Kouzou Fuyutsuki, who would eventually become the Vice Commander of NERV under her husband. It was her thesis and work that persuaded Fuyutsuki to join NERV.

Detailed Information: Though Yui supposedly died during a test of the EVA Units in 2004, it is more accurate to say that she simply disappeared from physical existence during the test. However, it is later found that her soul was absorbed into EVA Unit-01, an occurance which serves to explain the instances where EVA Unit-01 has of its own accord protected Shinji from danger. Yui also had ties with SEELE as well as NERV during her first years on Project E. Gendo used her DNA to help create Rei, which explains the similarity in appearance between them.

The MAGI system is composed of three supercomputers programmed with different ways of thinking, and Naoko's personality, divided into that of a woman, a mother, and a scientist, is the one that is programmed into the MAGI machines. However, she was the only one not to transfer over to NERV when Gehirn was disbanded. She is also the mother of Ritsuko Akagi, the one who would eventually become Head Researcher for NERV.

Detailed Information: Naoko's research and insight was invaluable in discerning the contents of Adam as well as attempting to create the first Evangelions. She participated in many of the first experiments regarding Evangelions, including the one that caused the disappearance of Gendo Ikari's wife, Yui. Naoko also was having an affair with Gendo, but when the first of the Rei clones was introduced to her, Naoko showed considerable dislike towards her (even though she was only a child) because of her obvious resemblance to Yui. Naoko eventually learned from this Rei that Gendo was merely using her, and didn't love her, and in a fit of rage, Naoko accidentally killed the first Rei by choking her. Afraid of being found out about her actions, and in despair over Gendo's true feelings for her, Naoko ended up killing herself by throwing herself off of the top balcony of the MAGI system room.
