    Not-So-Official HL Movie News

Big John's HL IV: World Without End Movie FAQ. The unofficial but interesting scoop about Highlander: World Without End from our resident Rysher Highlander Forum journalist.

    July 7, 1999

    HL4 Stuff:

    1. Why did they change Duncan's age from 400 years old to 100 years old in the new movie?

They didn't. In 1995, a new Highlander movie called "Highlander: The Immortals" was announced by Miramax. The film was written by Gregory Widen and featured a new Immortal character — neither a Scot nor a MacLeod — who became Immortal in 19th century America and interacted with 20th century characters. Various reports mentioned that time travel would be an element of the story. Adrian Paul and Christopher Lambert were not involved in any way with this film. It will not be made. The new Highlander movie will be a completely different film.

    2. Now what?

Around the time that Adrian was directing "Revelation 6:8," several interviews featured him expressing interest in a sixth season of "Highlander: The Series." He said he'd also like to do a Highlander movie if the script was good. DPP was quoted as saying that they'd love to have him. And, finally, it was announced that Adrian had signed for the lead role in the new movie for a cool million dollars. The script would be written by Eric Bernt ("Surviving the Game," "Viruosity"). Christopher Lambert might be back as Connor MacLeod.

Then things changed. It seemed that Eric Bernt was out and Gregory Widen, the Highlander creator who wrote the first movie, was in. Widen would write and direct a script called "Highlander: The Search for Connor" starring Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod and Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod. Filming dates were mentioned and abandoned several times. At the Official Highlander Convention, The Celebration, in April 1998, Bill Panzer told me this: "We've got Duncan MacLeod. We've got Connor MacLeod. And there can be only one." I asked him if Gregory Widen was involved. He said, "Gregory Widen is involved." And that's all he'd say.

Months went by. A year. Not a single scene had been shot for the movie and various rumors said that there have been as many as five rejected scripts for the film. Peter Wingfield told the crowd at Chronicles '99 that David Abramowitz, head writer for The Series, had written a script in addition to the one written by Gregory Widen.

In May, it was finally announced that the new Highlander movie would begin filming in October 1999. The title is now "Highlander: World Without End," and the film will star Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod, Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, and Peter Wingfield as Methos. Jim Byrnes reportedly spoke with Bill Panzer at the 1999 June Sword Spectacular Weekend about a role for Joe Dawson in the film.

We know nothing about the plot. At one point Panzer said that the movie was about Duncan and Connor dealing with a problem created by one of them in the past. That's really all we know.
