The event horizon of the wormhole shimmered slightly as the latest MALP was sent through, this time to explore another of the many planets whose co-ordinates Col. O’Neill had input into the computers. He had given them many new gate addresses during the time he had possessed the knowledge of the Ancients and the SG teams were keen to explore the new worlds. Sam Carter sat in the control room, eagerly awaiting the first transmission from the MALP so she could see if the planet was a viable one for SG1 to explore. Having been cooped up in the base for over a week, she really wanted to get back out and see new worlds once more. She didn’t bother to turn when she heard someone descending the stairs, knowing that the new arrival was General Hammond. She saw Col. O’Neill, Daniel and Teal’c enter the control room from her right and smiled to herself, knowing the rest of SG1 was as eager as she to get back out there.
“Major Carter?” Hammond asked, not needing to be specific in his questions as she knew what he was asking for.
“General, the MALP has just begun sending back data Sir. Atmosphere is breathable and early indications are that the planet may be inhabited. As you can see, the area around the gate appears to be well frequented, with tracks heading off in a number of different directions” she told him, pointing out the tracks on the monitor beside her. A surge of excitement coursed through her as she turned the MALP and instructed it to head off to one side. A small building was just visible in the images, appearing to be fairly close to the gate and relatively sophisticated. Ideas and theories began to form in her mind as she looked at the images they were receiving, wondering whether the inhabitants were indigenous to the planet or descendants of an Earth culture. She turned to look at Hammond as Col O’Neill began to speak.
“General, do we have a go?” he asked, casting a sideways glance at Carter as he sensed her excitement. He hid a smile, knowing he was not the only one who was desperate to get back to active duty.
“Yes Colonel, you do. Mission briefing in one hour” Hammond told them, nodding to O’Neill as he turned and headed for the stairs. Once his back was turned, he allowed himself a small smile at SG1’s eagerness to be back in the thick of things.

Carter stood at the base of the ramp, impatient to be going and slightly angry with Daniel for being late. She spun round as she heard hurried footsteps and rolled her eyes in resignation as Daniel made his way into the gateroom and over to join his team. The briefing had gone well and Hammond had given the go ahead for an Alpha III Recon, which meant they had two days to find out as much as they could and then report their findings. They made their way up the ramp and stepped through, emerging seconds later into a beautiful warm day. A slight breeze kept the temperature moderate and ruffled her hair as Carter made her way down from the alien gate. She looked around her, taking in her surroundings quickly as O’Neill motioned them to spread out and head for the structure they had seen in the MALP transmission. Weapons at the ready, they made their way quickly towards it and were amazed by what they saw. A single storey building made of what appeared to be metal, with no obvious entrance. The walls were smooth to the touch and slightly warm, Carter discovered when she reached out and touched one, as it seemed to react to her touch. The others did the same, walking around the perimeter of the structure in an attempt to find a way in. They were soon back where they had started, no closer to finding an entrance and slightly agitated by their lack of success. Carter looked at the walls more closely, reaching out and laying her hand flat against the wall once more. She jumped back as the patch of wall beside her hand began to shimmer, sliding to one side to reveal an entrance into the building.
“How’d you do that?” O’Neill demanded, his eyes searching the surrounding woodland for any sign of a trap.
“I have no idea sir, but....” she told him, leaving her sentence unfinished as she indicated the opening before her.
“OK, we have a little look, but stay on your guard just in case Major” he told her, motioning the rest of the team to step inside.

“General, the machines we found in the building are technology far more advanced than ours sir” Carter told Hammond as the team sat in the briefing room, having returned from the planet an hour before.
“What exactly are we dealing with Major?” Hammond asked, studying the playback of the video Dr. Jackson had taken during SG1’s visit to R3A-916 as he tried to determine whether an alliance with the planets indigenous population would be viable.
“I’m not sure sir, but no attempt was made to stop us from entering the building. I don’t believe the machines to be weapons though sir” she replied, her mind racing at the possibilities this technology could bring.
“How can you be sure Major?” Hammond demanded, tearing himself away from the video to stare intently at Carter.
“I can’t be totally sure sir, but I believe that were the machines weapons, there would have been some sort of defence surrounding them. Something to stop people just walking in and taking them sir and there was no such defence system” she informed him.
“Have you been able to form any theories as to what the machines do do Major?” Hammond wanted to know as he considered the possibility that this planet may be another wasted effort.
“Not yet sir. Machinery is not my area of expertise. We really need someone with a sound knowledge of mechanics to have a look and whether the machines can be activated” she finished, a trace of dejection in her voice as she wondered where they were going to find such a person.
“Do you have anyone in mind?” Hammond asked, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as a face came to mind.
Sam looked at O’Neill as a face came to mind, seeing he’d had the same thought as they both chorused “Siler!”.

Siler stood at the bottom of the ramp anxiously, wondering whether this was such a good idea as he recalled what had happened the first (and only) time he had gone through the gate. It was not an unpleasant memory but it was one that forced it’s way to the forefront of his mind as he took long, slow breaths in an attempt to calm himself. He looked over his shoulder when he heard footsteps and smiled slightly as he saw SG1 enter the room, readying himself to once more step through the Stargate. A nod from O’Neill was the only prompt he needed and he started up the ramp, keeping close behind the rest of the team as they entered the gate. A gentle breeze met them on the other side, easing Siler’s tension slightly as he followed SG1 down the steps and off towards the building they had discovered. He was uncertain about what to expect when they got there, seeing no way in to the strange structure until Major Carter pressed her hand against a point on the wall and an entrance appeared. He looked quizzically at the scientist as they made their way inside.
“Don’t ask me why it works Sgt. I’m guessing that it must be triggered by female hormones or something similar as nothing happened when the others tried doing the same. Guess it’s just a female thing” she told him, hiding a smile as they emerged from a short corridor and into the main chamber of the building. Siler stopped where he was, unable to answer Carter as he stared at the machinery laid out before him. He’d never seen anything like it but he had a strange feeling that he wouldn’t have much trouble figuring out how to make it work.
“Well, there you go Siler” O’Neill prompted him, raising one eyebrow as he nodded towards the largest machine. Siler rolled his eyes slightly at O’Neill’s tone of voice, making sure that the Colonel didn’t see him, as he made his way over to the equipment before him. He knelt down by the base of the machine, running his hand over the smooth metal of the casing. Without knowing why, he pressed his palm against a small patch of metal that was a slightly different colour to the rest, smiling slightly as it slid back to reveal a small control panel.
“Found something” he said, his eyes remaining on the panel as SG1 gathered around him.
“What is it?” O’Neill asked suspiciously, peering over Siler’s shoulder.
“A control panel” Siler replied, a slightly sarcastic edge to his voice as he leaned forwards to look more closely at the small line of buttons on the panel. “Green?” he asked, glancing at Carter to get her opinion. When she nodded her agreement, he pressed the green button and held his breath as they waited to see what would happen. He noticed Carter doing the same and allowed himself a tiny smile at her reaction. They waited for a few minutes before the tension was broken as O’Neill shifted his weight. The sound of his boots scraping against metal seemed to echo around the room and made Siler uneasy.
“Well that was a monumental waste of time” he commented, the tone of his voice further irritating the younger man. Siler looked at Carter once more, seeing the disappointment written clearly on her face, and motioned the panel with his head.
“Try another?” he asked, seeing her face light up at his suggestion. He cautiously reached out and pressed the blue button, pulling his hand back swiftly as a noise started to issue from the doorway. Horrified, he looked around just in time to see the door slide shut, sealing them into the chamber. O’Neill was at the door within seconds, trying desperately to find a way to open it. When his attempts failed, he turned on Siler angrily, not needing to speak as his fury was plain to see.
“Now what?” he demanded, his eyes boring into Siler.
“Major Carter, try pressing your hand against the panel by the door again and see what happens” he said, praying fervently that his theory was correct. They all watched as Sam made her way to the place where the door had been and pressed her palm flat against the metal. With a small hiss, the door re-appeared and everyone decided to make a quick exit. Once outside, they all breathed a silent sigh of relief. Carter and Siler leant back against the wall as Daniel crouched down to one side of them and O’Neill paced angrily in front of them.
“Would you mind telling me what the hell that was all about?” he snapped, kicking small clumps of dirt out of the way. Before anyone could answer, they heard a noise behind them and spun round, weapons trained on the figure emerging from the woods.....
