Siler closed his eyes momentarily, massaging the bridge of his nose with thumb and forefinger as he tried to keep his temper. He had been studying the object on the table for days, trying to figure out what it was and how it worked, but had been unsuccessful in unlocking its secrets. He knew that, at some point after it had been brought back by SG-1, the device had changed and caused a couple of the SGC personnel to behave in a strange manner. He could clearly remember what had happened that night between himself and Major Carter and had been unsure how to act around her since then. He could feel his cheeks begin to redden as the vivid memories of that night surfaced unbidden and he quickly clamped down on his emotional response. He was almost certain that the object on the table had somehow been the cause of their uncontrolled passionate embrace and laid the blame for it there. Its not as if I really thought of Major Carter in that way he thought, snorting wryly as he shook his head. Of course he had thought of Carter in that way, he had just been realistic enough to realise that nothing would ever come of it and, under normal circumstances, nothing would have. However that night things had been different, the rules had been changed, and Siler was fearful that the same may happen again. If repeated, there was no way of knowing who would be affected the next time around, so Siler had kept the device locked in his office in an attempt to make sure it, and everyone on base, was safe. He glanced down at the sketches on his desk wondering, for the first time, whether he had been hallucinating when he had seen the strange images and designs etched into the smooth metal. He had put them down on paper as soon as he had come to his senses in the gate room, remembered what he had just done and bolted. Now, as he stared at the images he had drawn, he couldnt quite decide if the things hed seen had really been there or whether it was just his guilt at the situation with Carter causing him to come up with an explanation that would take the blame away from him. He sighed, giving up for the moment on the alien device. Tired of trying to figure out the purpose of the device, and feeling the need to be around other people, he got up and strode from the room, leaving the device laying on the table. As soon as he turned his back on it the alien device began to glow, delicate markings and images etching themselves into the smooth sides which seemed to move as the glowing object began to pulse slowly.

General Hammond stood in the control room, watching silently as the gate opened and the MALP began it slow ascent up the ramp and into the wormhole. A small bead of sweat trickled slowly down the side of his face and he absently wiped it away, wondering whether he might be coming down with some sort of virus. He made a mental note to visit the infirmary and get Dr. Fraiser to give him a quick check to make sure he was OK. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Sgt. Siler enter the room and smiled slightly, knowing the man was having trouble deciphering the artefact SG-1 have retrieved a few days before. His attention was pulled back to the present by Lt. Simmons advising that they were starting to receive the MALP transmission and he turned to look at the monitor beside him. The lights on the unit had been activated and spread a small pool of light into a seemingly bare room, walls and floor appearing to be made of smooth metal. As he watched, they began to glow softly and he took an involuntary half step backwards, looking at Major Carter to see if there was any sign of a change in any of the other readings.
Major Carter? he queried when she remained silent.
Sorry Sir. Theres no change in the heat or other sensor readings. It appears that the MALP may simply have triggered a lighting mechanism of some kind. Lets just wait and see if anything else happens Sir she replied, eyes glued to the screen as the sensors fed back information on their surroundings. There seemed to have been a minute increase in electro-magnetic activity within the strange room, but other than that there seemed to be no change in the atmosphere of the room at all. That fact alone was enough to make her curious about just where the light was coming from, as there seemed to be no obvious lighting source and no visible trigger to turn it on either. She sat back in her chair suddenly as the walls seemed to momentarily pulsate and gasped in surprise as she stared at the walls. Where there had been only bare, smooth metal moments before was now adorned with strange markings, which seemed to be very familiar. With a start she realised where she had seen them before.
Sir, those markings....I think they may have been one the wall in the meeting room on Earnests planet, the one where the four races used to meet. Remember when Col. ONeill had the knowledge of the Ancients downloaded into his mind and he went to the Asguard planet to have it removed? While he was there, the Asguard told him about the four races that had once met there. They were the Nox, The Asguard, The Ancients and The Ferlings. If Im right, those markings are the ones that represented the Ferlings in that room. We may have found the fourth of the major races that belonged to the so-called Interstellar Alliance! she exclaimed, unable to hide her excitement about what such a find could bring them. They had managed to get full plans for the DHD when ONeill had possessed the Ancients knowledge, and she wondered just what could be gained from the Ferlings.
Sir, SG-1 would like the Recon mission ONeill asked, though he didnt seem to be asking at all. He nodded slightly in acknowledgement when General Hammond nodded his consent and spun on his heel, making his way towards the door when he noticed Siler staring at the screen in shock.
Siler, you all right? he asked, looking back over his shoulder as he followed the Sgt.s line of sight back to the monitor.
Those markings were on the artefact you brought back a few days ago Sir he managed to say, stunned by the realisation that he had been right about what he had seen.
What?! ONeill demanded, wondering why Siler had waited this long to tell them. Why didnt you say something earlier?
Because I wasnt sure Id even seen them he replied, unsure of how to explain the events of that night without getting him and Major Carter into serious trouble. I was studying the device and thought I saw images like that on it's surface. I looked away and when I looked back, they were gone. I got down some rough sketches of what I could remember but, with the lack of evidence and the weird time loss, I wasnt sure if Id imagined them he explained, causing Hammond and ONeill to look at him sharply.
What time loss? Hammond wanted to know.
Well, I think I lost about six hours or so. I could swear I was only looking at the etchings for a matter of seconds but the clock said six hours had passed he told them, still puzzled by that occurrence. He avoided the bit about what had happened after and saw the relieved look on Carters face as he glossed over their indiscretion in the gate room.
I think maybe youd better go with us then. Maybe youll find some answers in that room ONeill stated, glancing at Hammond for his approval of Silers addition to the mission.
Very well. Mission briefing in 10 minutes he confirmed, turning back to the images on the monitor. Guess the trip to the infirmary is going to have to wait he thought as he turned his mind to the mission at hand.

An hour later and the team was ready to go, with Siler along to help with the technical analysis, and plenty of equipment to take readings on just about everything imaginable. General Hammond had warned them all to be careful, and not to touch anything so they could avoid another possibly life threatening situation like the one ONeill had gotten himself into when hed had the Ancients knowledge downloaded into his brain. As they made their way up the ramp ONeill glanced at Siler and smiled slightly.
Its easy he told the younger man, realising the reason for the trace of fear on the Sgts face was due to the fact that he had never actually gone through the gate.
Whatever you say Siler replied quietly, not wanting to allow the other team members to see just how scared he really was. They reached the top of the ramp and Siler paused, the others going on ahead as he took a deep breath and stepped forward. He felt the rush of adrenaline as his molecules were pulled apart and dragged along the wormhole towards their destination. Within a few seconds he was stepping out of the gate at the other end and instinctively took a deep breath, trying desperately to steady his nerves as the others turned at his arrival. ONeill just smiled and turned to his team, ready to give the orders on what they should be looking for. He was slightly taken aback to find that they were already beginning their explorations as they had done so many times before, so he turned to Siler.
Lets have a look at the markings here on the floor he said, noting that the others had spread out to the walls and seemed to be ignoring the large tableau etched into the smooth metal floor. Behind them the gate shut itself down, causing Siler to start slightly in surprise as silence descend on the room, boots against metal the only thing marring the almost oppressive lack of sound. The two men moved in unison to the large circle that surrounded the marking and knelt on opposite sides. They looked at the scene etched into the metal and glanced up at each other with a smile as they realised what it portrayed. The scene depicted six naked humans, three men and three women, participating in different sexual acts and seemingly enjoying themselves a grreat deal.
Almost like the Greek Mythological Sirens Siler remarked, turning his gaze back to the scene before them.
The what? Jack asked.
Sirens. They were reputed to be of unbelievable beauty and were said to lure unwary sailors to their death. They were said to offer promises of absolute ecstasy within their wordless song, to which no man alive was immune. Of course they lied, because the sailors would turn their ships towards the sound and end up suffering an ugly death when they crashed on the rocks Siler explained matter-of-factly.
Really? Sound like nice ladies Jack replied sarcastically, surprised by Silers obvious knowledge on the subject.
Quite Siler agreed, extending his hand towards the etching as Jack did the same. As they touched it, a gas began to be released from the circle, rendering all the occupants of the room unconscious before they could even realise what was happening. As the fell to the floor, the etchings on the floor began to shimmer and two of the women from the scene rose into the air and solidified into humanoid women. The two strangers looked down at the people laying on the floor, then at each other, and smiled.

Hammond stood in the control room and watched SG-1 leave, massaging the back of his neck with his hand in an attempt to loosen sore muscles. The gate shut itself down and he turned away, intending to head down to the infirmary and get Dr Fraiser to give him a full examination to make sure he wasnt coming down with some sort of virus. As he started to make his way from the room, the klaxon began to sound, announcing an unscheduled off-world activation. He quickly turned back to Lt. Simmons, who was staring intently at the screen before him.
Its the Tokra Sir he informed Hammond, both men breathing a small sigh of relief as Simmons deactivated the Iris to allow their allies access. As soon as the gate had opened, a figure stepped through and Hammond smiled as he recognised his friend Jacob Carter, Sams father and new host to Selmac. He quickly made his way down into the gate room to greet his friend, the Tokra host greeting him warmly with a firm handshake.
Hello Jacob. How are you? he enquired of his friend as the two men made their way upstairs to the briefing room.
Im fine George. Yourself? Jacob replied, taking a seat and turning to his friend.
Fine thank you. So, to what do we owe this honour? Hammond asked, getting straight to the point.
Ive come to see Sam. Selmac believed it was about time I had a little father-daughter time with Sam and I agreed so here I am. I take it shes on a mission? he guessed correctly.
She is. However, SG-1 is on a short Recon mission so they shouldnt be more than a few hours. Youre more than welcome to stay and wait for her to return Hammond suggested, watching his friend closely.
Why not? Itll give me a chance to find out what shes been up to he replied, pride evident in his voice at his daughters career. He suddenly felt a wave of dizziness wash over him and gripped the edge of the table to steady himself until it passed.
I thin youd better go and see Dr. Fraiser, just to be on the safe side Hammond told him as he saw the movement.
Maybe youre right. Ill be back before long Jacob confirmed, eager for news on his little girl. He made his way from the room and down towards the infirmary, steadying himself against the wall several times as more waves of dizziness hit him. He passed Silers office and noticed the door was open, but thought nothing of it and continued on his way. Once he had gone, the artefact on Silers desk began to glow again, the soft red light being emitted starting to pulse faster as it once again worked its magic on the SGC.
